*sigh* Like the gender binary needs more reinforcement…
Thanks to Dr. Lisa Wade over at Sociological Images for the pic and commentary.
“Dieting is for women.
I mean we all know that dieting and women go together like peas and carrots. We know this — collectively and together, even if we don’t agree that it should be this way – not because it’s inevitable or natural, but because we constantly get reminded that women should be on diets and dieting is a feminine activity.”

I think that it is clarifying that they are not, in fact, selling satyr or pegasus cheese

I think the Cadbury’s Crispello thing is more bizarre than that. Especially the advert.

People love to see that their food is natural. Few of them critically think about such notions are realize that there are lots of natural things that are not good for them, like arsenic and the majority of the McDonalds menu.

I never knew such a product existed, I just saw the advert and and article about it on the Guardian’s web site. How perfectly dreadful. Did they realize that they were taking all the negative tropes about women and making it into an ad?

Agreed.
Except the Filet-o-fish. You cannot besmirch that lovely fish patty wrapped in a tender cheese embrace lovingly slathered with the mild tartar sauce only angels can make. :)

Lol. Are you calling me an angel? I used to work at McDonalds when I was in high school. If I may make a suggestion, ask for the filet to be cooked fresh when you order a filet of fish :)

Are you aware that Lisa Wade is asking for a “balanced look” at female genital mutilation? I have stopped reading that blog because she has refused to apologize for that comment even though many people have asked her to do so. I have slammed her for it here:
Here is an entry from Freethought Blogs slamming it as well:
http://freethoughtblogs.com/zinniajones/2012/12/female-genital-mutilation-balance-at-the-expense-of-justice/
I am not saying you must not post links from that blog any more, but at least consider that you might be supporting someone who is virulently anti-women.

I looked at the Wade article and read the Hastings Center Report that she linked to (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hast.81/pdf). It seems to me that they have some valid points. Such as:
and:
It seems to me the balance that Wade is asking for is to actually look at the truth of the situation and to look at the truth of what western condemnation and attempted censorship have done. To acknowledge that not only have we been ineffective in stopping this practice, but that we are actually making things worse. That’s what I got from it anyways. Nowhere did I read that female genital modification is awesome and that we should be promoting it.

bleatmop, have you read Gyn/Ecology by Mary Daly? If not, you really need to start opening your eyes.

In plantations, slaves were often appointed as overseers over other slaves. And abolishing slavery did have negative effects on the livelihood of many former slaves. Does that mean that we should have a more balanced view of slavery and that we should “actually look at the truth of the situation”? Anyone who supports such flimsy arguments about such an enormous evil as FGM deserves nothing but heaps of scorn. Get real, bleatmop.

Umm… ok? Not seeing anything but rhetoric there, I’m guessing you didn’t come here looking for a conversation. I guess I’ll go get real or something 8)

You make ignorant arguments, I point out that your arguments are ignorant, tell you what to read to educate yourself, and provide a clear analogy, and *I’m* the one who’s using “rhetoric”? What exactly would you accept as “conversation”?
Stop supporting Lisa Wade and other FGM apologists. Just stop it.

Francois: You didn’t respond to anything I actually said. You just compared female genital surgery to slavery and told me to get real. It was the comparing it to slavery that was the rhetoric. You never told me to educate myself, you told me to open my eyes (another rhetorical tool). As far as my arguments being ignorant, please elaborate why. I would accept as a conversation as you taking what I said and responding to it. Throwing out unrelated inflammatory talking points isn’t a conversation, it’s one person yelling (on the internet) at another.

How is what I said “rhetoric”? You’re being dishonest in the face of my arguments. Can you point out one thing wrong with what I said?

World English Dictionary
rhetoric (ˈrɛtərɪk) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]
— n
1. the study of the technique of using language effectively
2. the art of using speech to persuade, influence, or please; oratory
3. excessive use of ornamentation and contrivance in spoken or written discourse; bombast
4. speech or discourse that pretends to significance but lacks true meaning: all the politician says is mere rhetoric
Look to the 2nd and 4th definitions. Mostly the 4th.
And now you’ve labelled my arguments as being dishonest and ignorant and yet you’ve still yet to actually say anything meaningful about them that I can actually respond to. If you are looking for a conversation here, please say something meaningful. Otherwise I am going to start ignoring you.

Hey dumbass, learn to logic. Wade might be totally, horribly beyond wrong in her piece on FGC*, but her alleged wrongness on one particular issue, has no bearing on her correctness on some other unrelated issue. That’s a really elementary logical fallacy.
Calling Bleatmop a troll and a FGC apologist because he agrees with Wade abotu cheese, makes me think your voice might be coming from under a bridge.
If what you want to say is that she is so horribly, inexcusably wrong that she should be blacklisted and discredited from all social justice oriented conversation ever, just come out and say it.

*I’m uncomfortable with her conclusions myself. But if the facts she reports are true, the conclusions do follow.
