“Cultural institutions reflect the values of society. ‘Nuff said.”
’nuff said because it’s a total crock of shit. :)
If that “Fair Share” Liberal thinking was even remotely true, then the movie “Entourage”, for instance – a film chock full of Misogynistic, White Male Privilege – would have been a runaway box office hit. It wasn’t. Are we now going to say it was a flop because there wasn’t enough minority-speaking roles in it?
Entertainment’s job isn’t to push puny, whiny, white-guilt liberal agendas. The job of entertainment is to entertain. It succeeds or fails on the basis of whether it does or doesn’t, and public opinion and history support this – it’s not race or gender or whatever the Liberal flavor of the month happens to be – just look at “I am Cait” as proof. Fact is, the market is almost entirely raceblind and genderblind when it comes to picking winners and losers, and liberal causes would probably go better if they often let the market do that very thing.
Even though most leading roles in movies are male, both men and women enjoy those movies 50/50. Even the ones that you’d think are predominantly female-oriented, like HBO’s “Girls” – fact is it draws its biggest ratings from men over 50. (Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2161274/Girls-unlikely-demographic-How-men-50-watching-hit-HBO-series-actual-girls.html)
The Cosby Show kicked ass ratings and earnings-wise. “Empire” has done very well on cable yet Tyler Perry’s movies, on the other hand, are hit-and-miss. “Crouching Tiger” did well. Will & Grace did well. “I am Cait” is sucking ratings-wise even though public support of her is high.
So to me entertainment is yet another domain that “Fair Share” Liberals try to pull into their domain of perpetual victimhood, touting depressed-face sighs and “tsk tsks” every time they see the race or culture the white-guilters are pretending to represent not adequately represented. Makes for a good commiseration moment, perhaps, but the underlying premise is ultimately a joke as much as saying pianos are a tool of racism “because, well, just look at the keys”.
So LOTR only had apparently 46 seconds of “non-white spoken” dialogue. BFD. It wasn’t a movie about non-white people. “Selma”, on the other hand, was and had almost two full hours of non-white dialogue, as did Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Family Reunion” which had two hours and 20 minutes of it, as did another huge box office success, “Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon” weighing in at 2hrs plus as well.
Star Wars Episode 4 didn’t have enough black people in it? Maybe it wasn’t a movie about black people and maybe also it’s that the majority of black people don’t really give a shit who’s under that storm trooper helmet or perhaps not even about Star Wars in general?
Perhaps they don’t give a shit about homosexuals, either, and yet look at how much dialogue the movie “Brokeback Mountain” had in it? A ton.
“The Single Mom’s Club” was a movie about black women and guess what? It has a shitload of black woman dialogue in it, too. Go figure.
Point is there are more than enough venues for every type of movie or TV show to be produced and seen nowdays, especially with the Internet, so if minority-spoken dialogue or lead characters is what they want they can surely find it no matter what.
Perhaps filmmakers need to be more bold and in fact try more minority-speaking and perhaps minority-leading roles in movies, thereby helping to shift culture in the right direction such as movies like Brokeback Mountain have. Even as a capitalist, nowhere does a true capitalist want innovation and creativity stifled, but in this case what I think is more stifling than the whole WMP thing is Liberals thinking their worldview of perpetual victimhood automatically applies in the same proportion and ways to the entertainment industry as it does to their sorry part of the world. Lack of success as a result of WMP? I think in this case the market is proving FSL’s wrong.

“The job of entertainment is to entertain. It succeeds or fails on the basis of whether it does or doesn’t”
So are you saying that society, as a whole, values the stories of white men significantly more than anyone else’s? Or are you saying most entertainment caters to white men because they’re the ones in our society with the money?
Either way, you seem to be supporting the video/post’s message that sexism and racism are still quite prevalent in today’s society. Isolated, there’s nothing inherently racist about TLotR’s lack of culturally diverse dialog. But TLotR is not isolated. It is three of countless films. The point is that a disproportionate amount of movies follow the same pattern indicating, as you unknowingly did, that society doesn’t care near as much for non-whites as they do for whites, and there is a lot more financial power in the hands of whites than non-whites.
It’s kind of like the Bechdel test. Just because a movie fails it, doesn’t mean it is a sexist movie. And just because a movie passes it, it certainly doesn’t mean that the movie has a positive message about women. Using the test on one individual movie is meaningless. Looking at movies collectively, however, there is such an overwhelming amount of movies that fail the test, it is a strong indicator of the unbalanced weight that our society gives to the stories of men over those of women.
