Has to be the most diabolical marketing scheme of all time. . . And it’s worked!

It’s on a par with double glazing. Selling you something you dn’t need when what you have is perfectly serviceable.

So the question is then: why can we see the fundamental problem of this particular snake-oil venture and yet, so many cannot. I mean, this doesn’t require the historical/archaeological evidence the JZ can bring to bear, nor the sociological angle NN can provide, nor the strident (:>) feminist analysis that RSitM has available. (You folks are all great btw, my intent is not to disparage your formidable talents – but rather illustrate how facile this whole religious bugaboo can be)
Religion falls with one simple question, yet persists in the rational minds(?) of so many.
The cynic in me tends to think that the clergy knows this is shit, but enjoy the status and power just a little to much to let the facade and the party stop.

Though seemingly different, the very thing which give both their power can be easily stoodup and overcome by the simple human capacity to doubt.

Unless that capacity is hammered out of people at a young age. :/

Well, I’ve shared much more than the sociological factors to the point of seeming redundant, I’m sure. But I’ll share once again. Many cannot see because neural circuity associated with critical social assessment and negative emotions deactivated due to neurochemicals associated with deep attachment.
It’s no accident that the snake oil salesmen used maternal/paternal and romantic/lover type terminology in scripture. They didn’t know what we know about reward chemicals and how that impacts behavior and perception of reality, but they were observant. Religion of this nature mimics an evolutionary purpose, namely the maintenance and perpetuation of the species.

Not hammered, but convinced. And not for the sake of good over evil; but for the power they believe they yield over both.

Well as my feminism was mentioned, I’ll add a couple of comments ;)
We’ve all discussed, many times, over the elusive treasure/prize/paradise offered by religion. In contrast, feminism, for example, offers no such joy. Well, it would if we got somewhere! but otherwise it is a hard long road. One that some of us choose, others find a nicer, easier path.
More generally, it takes a certain type of character to rebel. To buck the trend, to deviate from the norm. Whether that’s feminist or atheist or gnc or whatever. It’s the old sheep/lemmings analgy in a different format. Why cause ructions? Why not just go with the flow? And so, people do. Work, Family. Social life. Ambition. Blah. Blah.
I can’t imagine NN’s life in the Bible Belt. Uf. In Europe, I’ve never noticed religion or lack of affecting anything. Although in Spain, my religious neighbours are Catholic so they aren’t Christian anyway.
I have no answer. I really don’t. Fear of death is all I can lucidly come up with at the end of the day, and a desire to believe in eternity. Seems pretty pathetic in my view. Lack of purpose in life? Inability to take control? Relinquishing responsibility? The inevitable opium of the masses?

Duality, duality everywhere, and and nary a place to rest… Long ago before time was measured, forces that became the Matrix discovered that life in this universe operated from a system of duality. It wasn’t an adversarial system, just a way to make things work, give themselves purpose, and evolve. Being already corrupt and “evil” these forces invented an artificial adversarial concept with which to re-shape duality. Call it the predator-prey concept if you will, or competition through pride. Instead of two opposite forces working together you now had the same forces seeing each other in a competitive way. Results are there for all to see who have eyes to see.
