It’s quite ironic that those who say:
(1) “Government spending/stimulus never creates jobs”; and
(2) “Cutting military spending will cost thousands of jobs”
are very frequently the same people.
I don’t know who first said this, but the US is essentially “An insurance company with an army.”
One way to reduce the prison population (and the epidemic of gun violence) would be to end the War on (Some Classes of People Who Use Some) Drugs. A substantial amount of people who are in jail are there merely for drug possession, which is not a violent offense. If we stopped imprisoning people for that, a substantial number of people would be out of jail, and since they would not be considered as having a criminal record, would prevent them from forming a permanent underclass. But the prison industrial complex lobby would do anything to prevent that. (I’d also like to note that locking people up forever is not being touhg in crime, it’s being tough on criminals).
And the military should also be cut. The US spends more than the next ten countries combined (cite). (To be fair, part of the reason some of those countries can spend so little is because the US military helps do what they would have to do themselves, like keep trade routes open. If the US spends less on guns, then some countries would have to spend less on butter if they wish to retain the same level of security.) But even in that case, there is still much military waste. A few years ago, the US Congress voted to spend $13 billion on weapons systems the pentagon doesn’t want.

@VR “How is this a contradiction of capitalism?”
This isn’t my field of expertise, compared to the The Arbourist, I’m an absolute neophyte. That said, I have a few ideas that may serve as an answer to your question.
Empty Homes Vs Homeless People – Capitalism mythology says that, being the master of the markets that it is, what is needed by a market will automatically be provided and at a price that will ensure that the market is sated. The massive amount of empty homes shows that the market is producing excessive waste. Further, all the homeless suggest that there is simultaneously a massive demand. Too much supply and unmet demand is a situation that should not exists, according to capitalism, yet there it is.
Productivity VS Wages – A huge tenet of Capitalism mythology is that by working hard, one achieves more reward. It is this promise of reward that encourages people to work at all. Obviously, this isn’t the case. More work is not rewarded, AND people are working despite this.
Congress VS Population Millionaires – Capitalism mythology says that it is better than other systems because it doesn’t have a ruling class that has all the money/power, but umm…yeah.
1/2 the population in poverty – See above
Racism in judicial system – Capitalism mythology states that people have an equal starting point. Racism, or any institutionalized discrimination, undermines the proposed fairness of Capitalism
tax spending – Capitalism mythology says it provides what the market demands. The demand for accessible school, healthcare, etc., is huge. How many people you know in need of a missile silo?
