We are on course to have a ice-free arctic during the summer months. This is yet another indicator of traumatic warming of our world due in part to our activities and policies. The climate is changing rapidly and a new dynamic equilibrium is being established.
“Waves rearing as high as the second-floor windows of a building have been detected in the Beaufort Sea for the first time.
Arctic waves are normally kept in check by sea ice, which has traditionally covered large areas of the Arctic Ocean even in the summer. But warmer temperatures as a result of climate change are melting away more and more of that ice.
A wave gauge deployed in the Beaufort Sea in the western Arctic in 2012 has already measured some of the consequences, recording wave heights of almost five metres during a September storm.”
Daaaamn, waves in the Arctic Ocean – here is the bit on the positive feedback loop being established.
“Those waves, in turn, may gain enough power to smash away more sea ice, generating a “feedback mechanism which drives the Arctic system toward an ice-free summer,” they wrote in their paper.
In his blog post on the website of the American Geophysical Union, Thomson added, “Bigger, more powerful waves could also accelerate erosion of the Arctic Ocean coasts, which are already breaking down rapidly from the effects of climate change and melting of permafrost.”
The stories about the changing climate are often mixed in with stories about companies contemplating the new shipping routes that will become available and the resources that can be exploited once the ice is gone.”
The gradual nature of AGW is the perfect villain in this situation precisely because of our human tendencies toward short-term thinking.
Short term thinking will be the end of us.

That picture was photoshopped and the “crisis” you speak of has been manufactured by a left-wing conspiracy bent on a communist state. Besides, even if there are two-storey waves, all the unicorns and leprechauns on the big ice sheets in front of them can hold them back with their magic powers. Don’t you know anything? Geesh.

Oh dear…. In the words of climatologist, Professor Jason Box: “We’re fucked”

Arb, thanks for bring awareness about this.
For anyone interested in what the top climate change scientists are currently saying about the Arctic warming emergency, I highly recommend watching the video in this post (link below). At minute marker 27:27, take note at what we must do to curtail this crisis. I simply don’t see it happening anytime soon, especially with #1 — dismantling the fossil fuel economy. As Arb noted, short-term thinking will be the end of us.
There seems to be a lot of apathy. The media has played a huge role in aiding the fossil fuel industry by disseminating misinformation produced by the fossil fuel industry. Robert Scribbler has done some excellent posts on the climate warming crisis. This is his most recent.

Thank you – thought I’d have a little fun with that one. ;)
I’m far from an AGW alarmist – you’ll find some posts/comments by me which push against the extreme of that position from time to time – but at the same time I find the politicizing and ignorance of the entire topic both embarassing (as an intelligent species), infuriating, and practically hopeless. For instance, even if we had draconian environmental policies in North America, would it be enough to counter what China and India are doing pollution-wise? I think we did the planet a disservice when we moved off of the pollution argument – something society could perceive as within its control – to the “climate” argument which feels much more out of our control.
Therefore rather than trying to convince a mass of ignorants, I find myself instead working more towards trying to someday afford the space condo or interplanetary yacht I’m going to need to move to once this all hits the fan so I can live out the rest of my years. I don’t like it, but at least that’s something which is slightly within my control that idiots can’t screw up for me. In other words, I’d prefer to get off the Titanic long before it hits the iceberg. :)

I don’t even think the debate needs to be if its AGW or just plain old GW. Either way we need to do everything we can to reverse the trend. We know that CO2 is what is driving the global warming and climate change. We know that we can slow the tide of GW by burning less fossil fuels and using cleaner fuels.
Anyway, I think the point is moot. Even is all man made CO2 was stopped being put into the environment today, temperatures would continue to rise for a very long time.

@Bleatmop: Yep, I agree – can do enough just dealing with all our obvious pollution without getting wrapped around the axel over AGW vs GW. And I also find it disturbing that apparently these feedback loops aren’t accounted for in the current models? The guy studying the Greenland melt has said as much.

@VR Did you watch the Vice episode (it’s on HBO) where they talked about the Greenland melt and how the pollution is making it worse? The black soot that has been carried by air currents there lands on top of the ice and makes it black, thus making the ice black. This not only absorbs more energy from the sun but also helps makes channels in the ice, both of which makes the ice melt faster. From the sounds of things in that episode that Greenland is going to be ice free in the near future is a forgone conclusion. What is scary is that some of that soot is just now starting to appear in the antarctic.

Hi Bleatmop, yes that was exactly the guy I was referring to (I love Vice – it’s a kickass show owned by a Canadian who does us proud). Didn’t know the soot was showing up in the Antarctic as well (I may have missed that in that episode). Guess we’re going to have to find a profitable solution to make that stuff heavier so it falls straight down after a fire/eruption? ;)
