It is to the point that I am finding such statements irritating. The phrases “Physics Says Raindrops Should Not Exist” or “Science Says Raindrops Should Not Exist” make scientists look like idiots. In this age of science denial there are large segments of the American people that won’t get past the headline and use the headline to add to their “See, scientists don’t know everything (or anything) attitude.”
When I saw this video yesterday, I knew exactly where they are going because the exact same situation applies to the formation of salt crystals from water solutions. Both the tiny crystals and the raindrops require nucleation to get started. This has been known for most of a century if not longer. The only reason it came up was to sell science. But the misleading titles are helping to sell science denial.
How about “Raindrops Can’t Form without Dust” or “Raindrops Won’t Form in Clean Air?” Creating the false mystery to sell the science used to be one of my favorite techniques, but in today’s polarized world, maybe not so much.

I would have to lay the blame on too much reading. Or maybe this time was the movie adaptation of LoTR – I seem to remember Sam lamenting something or other.. :>
