Debating people with that have a little to much faith and not enough regard for history one often runs into this particular meme that Hitler was an atheist and it was his Atheism was the prime motivation for all the horrible acts he perpetrated on humanity. Of course it is complete bollocks that Hitler was an atheist and atheistic values are responsible for his warped view of reality. Warped views of reality are religions speciality and thanks to Non-Stamp Collector we can see how wrong the religiously deluded are, thanks again NSC. :)

The appropriate answer to the “Hitler was an atheist” (and it relatives using Stalin and Mao) is basically “So what if he was an atheist?”
Being a member of group X doesn’t give anyone the authority to speak for that group. Besides, if Hitler doing X is enough of a reason to avoid doing X or enough to make X evil (as is implied by using “Hitler was an atheist” as an argument) then it is unreasonable to restrict it to atheism alone. Hitler also wrote a book, got married, had a pet dog, and painted pictures. Are they against these things too?
Similar examples can also be used with Stalin and Mao. For example, Stalin changed his name, Mao was a calligrapher, and both of them got married and had kids.

Don’t know what Hitler did with his paintings, but he caused his wife’s suicide and killed his dog. Now come on, the man murdered his dog. Must be an Atheist.

Further, as Dawkins has repeatedly pointed out, it doesn’t matter if he was an atheist. Germany was a very protestant nation, and almost all those who were not protestant were catholic. It was those people who carried out Hitlers policies, everything from delivering the mail to exterminating people in death camps. Hitler didn’t kill anyone, except maybe himself and his wife.

Bleatmop,
” Hitler didn’t kill anyone, except maybe himself and his wife. ”
So ordering the murder of others is not murder ? Of course by your logic, he did not even murder Eva Anna Paula Hitler. She voluntarily bit the cyanide capsule.

Alan Scott – Perhaps you need some reading comprehension. I did say Hitler didn’t kill anyone (with stated qualifications). I did not say he didn’t share responsibility for the murder of so many people. Clearly he, among others, planned the death of many Jewish people and other “undesirables”. Just as it was clear that it was Christian soldiers, mostly, that carried out these policies.
The implication of this is clear. Even if I were to grant that Hitler was an atheist (I’m not, that point is nebulous at best), there are far more Christians responsible for those death camps than there are atheists.
