I’m thinking we need a Canadian version for our own reality challenged Conservative party.

True in so many ways, and I think the main reason why so many Republicans would actually vote Independent right now if there eas a suitable candidate out there. Come to think of it, it’s why so many conservatives I know are independent.
As for your disdain for Harper, many Americans would love to have a conservative running that didn’t bring with him all the religious baggage. Let’s propose a swap – bring Obama up here and send Harper down there. Think of what that would do for each country’s health care systems, for one, and financial systems, for another. Nobody would be. Itching about planes that we need, either. :)

So how does one get a candidate that is not religiously vetted through the GOP these days? It would seem that unless you are overtly kissing the bible and consulting jebus for policy guidance, you won’t get anywhere in Republican politics.
I wouldn’t mind a trade, maybe just for a couple months as a trial period. :>

Banning gerrymandering would help. The current legislative districts are almost always so gerrymandered that, for the most part, the primary is the real election. Since so many seats are safe, it gives disproportionate power to the bases of each party. If you’re in a safe seat you won’t have to appeal to centrists, only your base. And if one party’s base is extremist, you get extremist candidates. In a competitive election, that would result in their defeat, but not in a gerrymandered safe seat. Hence the reason so many extremists (Michele Bachman, etc.) get elected.
I predict that a more moderate legislature would eventually drive presidential candidates to center, simply because the executive would have to share power with the legislature.
