You know who should not have access to phone/mp3 player/distractothon 3000’s? Junior high students. Responsible use of electronics seems out of reach of many of my students. The best part is that they are willing to die on that technological hill with all the ensuing teen-age drama that seems to shadow their every step.
A solution could be cell phone jamming in particular areas where taking phone calls would not be appropriate. I just may have to ask Santa for such a device for testing purposes.

Given the huge problem with “sexting”, I have to seriously question the judgment of parents who allow their middle schoolers to have cell phones at all. I plan to hold off on allowing my children to have a cell phone until they get their driver’s license. And I will try to find a basic phone that can only do calls and non-picture texts.

That would seem to be a reasonable plan of action. :)
I’m not against children having access to technology, but the time must be taken for them to learn how to use it appropriately and responsibly within the educational context.

Schools, restaurants, parks, subways – jammers would be a great idea (some great youtube videos of support out there of people either jamming or confronting rude cell-talkers). I have a few teenage relatives who I catch trying to text while we’re out on family get-togethers at a restaurant, and without having a jammer I do have the ability to absolutely humiliate them in front of everyone which has worked quite well so far to prevent the behavior a second time.
And yes, PC cops, I’m deliberately targeting and lowering these kids’ self-esteem to reinforce more positive and constructive alternatives of behavior in social settings. :)
