Feminist Quote of the Day – Andrea Dworkin

February 13, 2016 in Feminism | Tags: Andrea Dworkin, The DWR Quote of the Day | by The Arbourist

“Because women are everywhere, and because, as Shulamith Firestone said, a sex class is invisible because everyone takes it to be nature, and because many of the abuses that women systematically suffer are called sex, and because women are socialized in a way to make us indifferent to the plight of other women, and because there are no institutional means of redress for the crimes committed against us, feminism sometimes seems as if a group of women are standing in front of a tidal wave with one hand up saying: “Stop. “ That is why people say, “Well, it’s hopeless. “ And from “it’s hopeless, “ people say: “Well, it’s life. ”The stance of the women’s movement is that it is not “just life. “ It is politics; it is history; it is power; it is economics; it is institutional modes of social organization: it is not “just life. ” And that applies to all of it: the sexual abuse, the economic degradation, the “natural” relationship between women and children (to paraphrase Firestone again: women and children are not united by biology, we are united by politics, a shared powerlessness; I think this is true).

The women’s movement is like other political movements in one important way. Every political movement is committed to the belief that there are certain kinds of pain that people should not have to endure. They are unnecessary. They are gratuitous. They are not part of the God-given order. They are not biologically inevitable. They are acts of human will. They are acts done by some human beings to other human beings.”

— Andrea Dworkin, Letters from a War Zone

Arb,

Just want to thank you for your efforts. (I think JZ used the modifier ‘valiant’ and it’s nothing less. I first read Andrea Dworkin back when I was in a first-year Sociology class at University and her words are still resonating with me.

It must get tiresome – and irksome – to have to say the same things repeatedly. Please know that your efforts are appreciated and inspiring; it’s very depressing to realize that men who hate women have managed to re-define the word ‘feminist’ into ‘women who hate men’. :(

On a positive note, however, I’ve just come from acquiring a Valentine for my darlin’ — I bought it at his favourite shop; the liquor store! :)

@carmen

Thank you carmen. Your kind words are appreciated. :)

“I first read Andrea Dworkin …”

I have trouble reading her, as her style is very colloquial – she tends to write very stream of consciousness-ish as well. Hard to follow. I like it when I can find a good quote of her online, because when she’s on, she is really on.

“It must get tiresome – and irksome – to have to say the same things repeatedly.”

Yep, it certainly does. But, taking a minority opinion invites that sort of thing. Other fun times include being a socialist in Alberta, so the uphill slog is definitely a well practiced activity.

“it’s very depressing to realize that men who hate women have managed to re-define the word ‘feminist’ into ‘women who hate men’. :(“

Men will do what they think is necessary to maintain power in society. :/

I’ve just come from acquiring a Valentine for my darlin’

Nice. We still have to decide where we’re going to go for our post-Valentine’s meal. Strangely, everything is much cheaper after these much hyped days pass.
