One of the things we need to come to terms with is how much easier theism is to accept than reality. Compare the nutshell video, about as stripped down version of human prehistory and history as one could make and compare that with “God did it.” Compare how difficult it would be to describe one’s personal morality absent theological frameworks with those who describe their morality as “God.”
Belief in a god is a shortcut to an acceptable position in our society and allows one to identify one’s “tribe” by simply applying one word labels (Christian = good/safe; atheist = bad/dangerous).
Laziness is beneficial in many, many ways but “spiritual” laziness (science = hard, magic = easy) may doom our future.

Especially true in light of our culture promoting ‘consumption’ as a positive value for people. I mean that palatability is such selling point these days – finding out how the world actually works is hard – having it spoonfed to you via religion is waaaaaaay easier.

ROFL. Funny how archaeology has changed the narrative so much in such a short time. This video is recent, but it is already stale dated. For example, the little talk about fire being Homo Sapiens Sapiens magic trick. Turns out early hominids were using fire 2,000,000 years ago, and did so for hundreds of thousands of years at a single site. These narratives are great, and interesting, but It should emphasise the science, not the storyline. Many conclusions are based on highly fragmentary, and scarce evidence. The conclusions are not so well supported as this little story makes them out to be. Especially as they pertain to behaviour. Anyway, as biochemists start to isolate and identify our behavioural genetic heritage, and improvements continue to be made in paleogenetics, we shall have actual scientifc evidence to support theories of behaviour. Who knows what to expect, but I expect some real surprises.
