I forewarn you, if you are about to start the DS9 series, you will have to persevere through the first season, as the cast and writing crew had not found their sea legs yet. But after season one (arguably) the show really started to cement in the story arcs that culminate with this darkly pivotal moment in the Star Trek Universe.
The Federation ostensibly in the Star Trek universe are the good guys – they are us – and that motif is quite evident in the other series that populate the canon. DS9, once it gets going, shifts the moral compass and makes everything more complicated and ethically entangled. It is much more engrossing dramatic experience as this clip illustrates. It is this muddy ethical field that makes DS9, if you can only watch one Star Trek series, the one to watch.

Battlestar Galactica remains, to me, the best sci fi series.

Finally something we can agree on, DS9 was the greatest Star Trek and IMHO the best TV show ever.

I am also a huge fan of BSG. The writing though was a little inconsistent at times as they really lost steam around season 2.5 ish.
Also, the religious sublot that was turned into one of the main arcs of the the story… that didn’t grate just a little? :)

Did turn a little mystical, and I was pissed they never explained who/what Starbuck was, but it was a good ride overall.
Have you ever read Robert Reed’s works, like Marrow? I am a hopeless fan.

No, but since I have a little time on my hands, I will look him up.
The whole Starbuck/Angel arc was poorly concluded, just like the series. :)

If you’re going to try Reed, and want a novel, start with Marrow. It’s the first in a library of work all centred on that universe. If you want to dip your toe, start with one of his many, many, many short stories. I’d recommend Alone, which is set in the Marrow universe. It’s a brilliant short, and a great taste of his writing style.

While the character development wasn’t there yet in season one, I wouldn’t say the writing was off. In fact, they even named The Dominion in that season and foreshadowed that they would be the threat in coming seasons, during the Tuliberry Wine episode.
I do agree that this is the best Star Trek. It’s funny that you guys are mentioning BSG as DS9 has often been accused of ripping off BSG.
