I consider myself to be a progressive of a sort.  I’m all for saving the earth and all that, but then I observe the goings on at the Sustainable Campuses conference here at the UofA all I can think of is ‘What the hell is the point?’.

I mean really, all we have here is the proto-educated elite coming together to make some noises about sustainability, recycling and earth saving in general to each other confirming their ‘green ethos’ and noble intent; a perfidious waste of time, but I imagine it looks darn good on the CV/resume.

I can guarantee that this cohort, like the previous and the one before that, will have their high expectations and noble goals quashed by the reality of the situation facing them ahead in their life path.

Being the educated elite they will gravitate toward the upper middle class of society, reaping the benefits and privileges of that socioeconomic station.  Only a very few will retain their ‘earth-friendly’ principles; most will happily defile the earth and others in the maintenance of their lifestyle thus propagating the cycle.

Lifestyle maintenance will be the end of us all.

Who wants to sacrifice comfort and security for the greater good?  Is that ethos even mentioned anymore in this capitalistic money based society anymore?  Why think of others when you can have a new big screen TV (insert techno gizmo/must have here)?

I’m certain that some good does come of such gatherings.  Raising consciousness and what not.  Incremental change is all that we can hope for, but unfortunately incremental change will not be enough.  Nor will the small progressive changes happen soon enough or on a significant scale to change the sodden downward spiral of our crumbling civilization.  When we finally flame out and the human population inevitably crashes only then will lessons be learned.  Mmmm… society based on greed and exploitation, not a good thing.  It worked so well as long as resources were available.  Not so good once said resources were all exhausted.  On our ruined shell of a planet, at least we can be proud of the fact we recycled our paper cups (at least some of the time).

I do like looking at the CBC technology and science section, every once and awhile they have some neat off the wall type articles like this one.

“Biologists at the University of Cincinnati used a laser ablation technique to remove part or all of the millimetre-long spines, which are too small to remove using a scalpel.

They then allowed the shaved males to mate to see what role the spines played in copulation.”

Apparently, male fruit flies need sharp protrusions on their reproductive organs to make coupling more successful.  This is not particularly outlandish ( ducks rank high) and the whole process is called ‘traumatic insemination‘.  Looks squicky, but it gets the job done.

“Those that got the full laser treatment, however, had only a 20 per cent chance of successfully mating with a female. When in competition with unshaven males for available females, the shaven males almost always lost.”

So now you know. :)

Debating the Deluded, but funny. :)  Full marks for another great video NonStampCollector. :)

Now you know, even if you did not want to.

The alt-med community, and their particular brand of stupidity had it coming…

Crazy comes in many flavours.  These particular douche nozzles are prime candidates for most insipid video ever posted on youtube.

During the holiday season with all the choral concerts to attend and sing at sometimes I can feel a little (very little) thaw in my heart toward religion as it is at least partially responsible for all the wonderful music.  Then I see this.

Ah yes, intolerance, ignorance and vapidity all rolled into one supernova explosion of Stupid representing the ugly facade that religion is.

Happy Holidays to all.

I bring this article to your attention only to illustrate the longevity of  certain popular myths.

“Drinking a cup of coffee for every cup of spiked eggnog likely won’t help you drive home more safety, a study on drunken mice suggests.”

The wisdom one can find on the internet.  We can all rest easy now that we know with more evidence that we had before that drinking caffeine does not help reduce the effects of intoxication.  Rather, it makes you a jittery drunk as a opposed to just plain ‘ole drunk.

“His advice for holiday revelers is to be responsible and plan ahead by establishing a designated driver, or stop drinking early enough to allow blood-alcohol levels to go down before getting behind the wheel.”
Compare this to the complete anti vaccination lunacy that vaccines cause autism.  It has been proven time and time again that this is not the case, yet the tomfoolery still persists.   Why?  I would suggest the stupid comes can be divided into three categories:  Too lazy, intellectually/research-wise, to0 arrogant to admit they are wrong, or too deluded from the start, as their world view took a left turn somewhere and has never come back to reality-ville.

Thus ended the rant.
