This is a delightful video. Nothing illustrates the absurdity of a bigoted position like keeping the content and switching the roles. Kudos to youtuber healthyaddict for posting this vid and especially for introducing me to Greta Christina’s Blog. I highly recommend checking the blog out for some truly thorough and well written debunking of theistic skulduggery.

Since Theistic skulduggery is mentioned, I assume the theme is partly Atheistic . So what did I learn from the video ? All Gay people are Atheists ? All Atheists are Gay ? No what I learned is that Lesbians are not funny and can’t act .

It seems all you are able to take from anything is sweeping generalizations about groups you want to demean. The very clear message is that the shit that is so often dished out to anyone who isn’t “straight” is just that: shit.
I imagine you were playing ignorant just so you could make that meaningless insult about the acting. I have a hard time believing even you are so dense that this video went over your head. That aside, awareness pieces aren’t really about acting ability, they’re about how well they illustrate their point. And in that regard, this video is a great success Except with you, it seems. But then, bringing you awareness would be a daunting task for anyone.

I love the end how she talks about how her love for her hetero friends and family is unconditional even though she doesn’t always understand their actions or decisions. Kinda hit home to me that even saying something like that can be demeaning, like sexual orientation or identity is something that you have to overlook and tolerate to love that person instead of just loving that person for whom they are.
Yet another thing I can try to unpack from my backpack of privilege.

Well put Bleatmop. Thank you for posting.
I have only had the chance to go through a couple of her blog posts, but I am looking forward to reading more of them. More gems of social awareness are awaiting me I’m sure :)

I too have only read a few post too. While they are well written, many are also quite long. It’s a good blog to read on one of my precious few days off I think. Thank you for finding this video and sharing!

Mystro,
” It seems all you are able to take from anything is sweeping generalizations about groups you want to demean. The very clear message is that the shit that is so often dished out to anyone who isn’t “straight” is just that: shit. ”
Yes sir, I got the message. I am the type the message is directed against .
” I imagine you were playing ignorant just so you could make that meaningless insult about the acting. I have a hard time believing even you are so dense that this video went over your head. ”
Ignorant is the last thing I am . The women are obviously lashing out at the straight community ie, me . Which is okay, perhaps the straight community has wronged them. I cannot know that . I don’t even mind you attacking me. I dished it out and can take it .
My problem with you is your tone . You seem to take offense that I would dare be so cruel to them . Well if you cut through all of their imagined cleverness, they are being exceedingly cruel to those they mock . Again the nastier you dish it out, the nastier you should be prepared to take it .
I obviously did not like the substance of what they said, but chose to attack their acting because I was more insulted by it . That you say the video is a great success makes me ask the question . What measure are you using ?

“The women are obviously lashing out at the straight community ie, me .”
They are not lashing out the straight community, they are illustrating the absurdity of common homophobic messages. If you are heterosexual but have the all too rare view that homosexuals have just as much right to their love as “straight” people do, then this vid is not targeting you.
” Which is okay, perhaps the straight community has wronged them. I cannot know that .”
You cannot know if gays have been unfairly treated by mainstream society? You must have your blinders on maximum strength. Bias against homosexuals is so prevalent, there are school children too young to understand what sexuality is (much less homosexuality) who are using the word ‘gay’ as an insult. The bias is pretty firmly ingrained into society at present.
“they are being exceedingly cruel to those they mock”
Really? Where? When? Give an example please.
” You seem to take offense that I would dare be so cruel to them”
No, I didn’t consider anything you said cruel. Immature, dishonest, and incoherent maybe, but not cruel. Rather, I take offence that you are deliberately twisting their position (and mine) into strawmen. I mentioned last time that I don’t believe that you are stupid enough to get our message so completely wrong. If you keep refusing to acknowledge the actual points I am clearly laying out for you, I may have to change my mind.
“That you say the video is a great success makes me ask the question . What measure are you using ?”
Right before I said the video is a great success, I said why I think so. Again, I don’t think your reading comprehension and intelligence level are so low that you couldn’t find that out for yourself. Unfortunately, the only alternative I can think of is that you are being maliciously dishonest in your responses. And it is that malicious dishonesty which has prompted my tone that you are not so fond of.

Mystro,
” You cannot know if gays have been unfairly treated by mainstream society? ”
I am not talking about the gay community as a whole . I am talking about the women in the video . OOOOOh, they are not talking about themselves at all? They are representing the whole gay community by taking the words homosexuality and heterosexuality and switching them in a comedy skit ? Just too clever for me .
But I still did not see it as a reconciliation as I saw it as an attack . As far as a success, I finally get your point . If I was judging a satirical piece I would rate it’s success in reaching people such as me, who are on the opposite side, or at least persuading neutrals. To do that it would have to be brilliant in it’s form and wide spread in it’s distribution .
The brilliance is a matter of opinion between you and I .
You have given no evidence that this video has a had a large following, so I can only judge you calling it a great success by the fact that it has reached you personally, even though you were already on board .
I am not being maliciously dishonest . I am merely responding satirically in kind to a satirical attack on my beliefs. My guess is that the women are responding also to attacks on their beliefs . And I am totally honest about my opinion of their performance .
Perhaps I am being too sensitive on the gay angle . It was the tie in with the Atheists that cemented my antagonism . You Atheists are pretty vicious on this site . As a Christian I believe in responding to all attacks, that I have time for .

“I am not talking about the gay community as a whole . I am talking about the women in the video”
You still don’t seem to grasp how wide spread the bias against homosexuality is. I have experienced homophobic induced hatred just for sticking up for equality, and I happen to be straight. They are not representing the whole gay community. They are commenting on a serious social issue.
“Just too clever for me .”
I’m starting to believe it
“But I still did not see it as a reconciliation as I saw it as an attack”
Against whom??? I asked you last time how this vid could possibly be construed as cruel and you have yet to answer. Lets break it down.
1) There are a bunch of people out there dishing out unjustified hatred towards homosexuals.
2)These two made a video showing how many of the forms that this unjustified hatred takes are absolutely ludicrous by applying the same ‘reasoning’ behind that hatred of gays to heterosexuals. If you think what they said was ludicrous, that’s the point. If it is ludicrous when it is said about “straight” people, it is ludicrous when it is said about gay people.
That’s it.
“I am not being maliciously dishonest . I am merely responding satirically in kind to a satirical attack on my beliefs.”
As I’ve repeatedly pointed out, what you respond to are attacks that you make up yourself. It is that misrepresentation of our points that is dishonest. Indeed, the only thing I’ve called you out on are these misrepresentations. Your views on gays hasn’t come up, neither has your religion. Well, not until you brought them up and said they were under attack.
“You Atheists are pretty vicious on this site ”
No, we call people on their bullshit. Notice how I’ve explained things repeatedly to make my points. If I was just being vicious, I would simply comment “You’re a fucking retard hillbilly” and leave it at that. But I think that would be in poor taste and probably just make things worse.
Maybe you should think about the fact that logic and reasoning seem like “attacks” to you.

Just watched a documentary last night on the Mormon Church’s (LDS) attack on Prop 8 in California. (“The Mormon Proposition”) WOW. Anyone else seen it? Very disturbing what goes on within the “religious right” on the homosexuality issue and the battle that homosexuals have to face just to have something resembling a normal life.

Mystro,
Here is good news for your side. President Obama will no longer defend the defense of marriage in court .
” I asked you last time how this vid could possibly be construed as cruel ”
You must have watched a different video than me . The ‘ therapist ‘ attacks the values of the straight ‘ patient ‘. The patient cannot defend herself from the attacks . That is what I viewed .
” Maybe you should think about the fact that logic and reasoning seem like “attacks” to you. ”
Next time I use cynicism and satire to counter attack your remarks, I will also make sure to wrap myself in the flags of logic and reasoning .

“The ‘ therapist ‘ attacks the values of the straight ‘ patient ‘. The patient cannot defend herself from the attacks . That is what I viewed .”
Yet again, I can’t believe you are that oblivious. Especially since I have spelled it out for you a number of times already. Sigh. Once more, and read carefully this time. Twice, or even thrice, if you need to, it’s okay.
The ‘therapist’ used attacks that are frequently used against homosexuals. In this act, however, they were used against a heterosexual. Why? Because, it is easier to notice that an attack on a particular lifestyle is complete bullshit if it is your lifestyle that is the one being targeted.
So if your aim is to bring awareness to the majority (in this case heteros), one very effective way of doing so is to display bigoted BS that is normally reserved for minorities (in this case gays) and show them what it would be like if that bigoted BS was thrown their way. This makes it very easy for the target audience to identify with the people who actually are attacked with this crap on a daily basis.
In summary, the people in this vid are not actually suggesting that heterosexuality is wrong and something to be cured. They are illustrating that when that kind of reasoning is used against homosexuality, it’s retarded and hurtful.
“Next time I use cynicism and satire to counter attack your remarks, I will also make sure to wrap myself in the flags of logic and reasoning .”
If you started using logic and reasoning at all, it would be a giant leap forward. I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so.
Oh, and when I carefully and consistently explain why I say something and show the logical steps to my conclusions, that isn’t “wrapping myself in the flag of reason”, it is actually using reason. That’s how it works.
