Good post. I’m no fan of either Microsoft or Apple, but I do own Windows-based laptops.
Back in my IT days I remember that Apples ran different controllers for their hardware, and of course different drivers for their O/S. That used to be part of the reason why their components were more expensive. Another reason was supply and demand – they simply did not sell as many Macs as Windows-based products so the fixed costs could not be lowered as much due to volume.
Beyond that, however, you’re also paying for all Apple’s retail infrastructure where in the Windows world this is passed on to private retailers. I don’t think these are the reasons for such exorbitant pricing (or excuses it), but it used to be some of the reasons for the higher price.
Either way, it’s like Apple is the governmental, closed-shop, protected public enterprise institution with union labor and Windows products are available in the free market. (Haha! Had to get that in there ;))
Related side note: thanks to Bell Canada for allowing me to just attach a $100 hard drive to my $99 satellite receiver to get PVR rather than me having to pay $500 for one with it “built in” like I do in the U.S..

Haha – great rant! With as many things as I’d wish Microsoft would change with products like Office 2010 and Windows 7, I’m still “sold” on a PC. I do, however, think Apple did well with Keynote.

Mac User
You are correct; Macintosh computers are overpriced and yes, you can probably get cheaper parts to upgrade your PC with. I think one of the reasons why ordinary people choose Mac over the PC is the simplicity. Perhaps that means that ordinary people are lazy or stupid, but each and every one of them are consumers and have purchasing power. While technology has developed into a large industry, most adults probably do not have the time or want to bother with it. Being able to upgrade a computer, while cost effective in the long run, is probably just a nuisance for the general populace. It is like investing; sure one could potentially reap much larger dividends with high risk stocks, but the research involved takes a lot of time and the uncertainty creates doubt. A lot of people do not have that kind of time to waste when they are struggling to put food on the table.
Your screen capture shows a well designed, clean and easy to navigate online store for purchasing a computer. Not many other competitors can compare, because the diversified nature of the PC is also its greatest enemy – you can never cover everything. Why do people purchase songs on i-tunes when they can go out and buy the CD? Because it is well designed, simple and easy to navigate. While the brand may have an influence on consumers, the user experience matters even more. And most people just want things to be easy. Bonus points if it also looks nice with home furniture.
I have used both PCs and Macs. Frankly, in my limited experience I have had much more problems with a PC than a Mac. That was then but still, it will take a lot for me to switch back to a PC. Ultimately it is just a computer…a tool in human hands. When I use a Mac I am reminded of that, while using a PC feels a bit like the opposite if you ask me.
