The correlation between religion and the capacity to do monstrous deeds is again shown by the following clip which describes a few of the honour killings that have happened in Canada since the turn of century. Most certainly patriarchal cultural norms play factor, but it religion that puts the icing on the cake, the ultimate enabler for evil malicious acts.
Canada is a secular multicultural country and to maintain the level of freedom available to the citizens of this nation, the rule of law must remain firmly grounded in reason and rationality. Let it be known that practices whether they come under the aegis of religion or cultural norms will not be tolerated if they violate this countries laws and/or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Funny how these religious fanatics want all the “freedoms” of their religion here to do harm to others yet want none of its punishments to be applied to themselves.

The Arbourist ,
I agree with you on this . Whenever I bring up this kind of stuff and also the danger of Sharia Law in Western countries, I am pilloried by your brother American Liberals .

I think I would not care to share kinship with any political/philosophical stripe that condones honour killing and other horrendous practices which clearly do not fit into any definition reasonable of civilization.
Which ‘American Liberals’ are arguing that honour killing and instating Sharia Law is good thing? It seems, outlandish.

None ! That is not what I said . American Liberals deny the dangers posed by Islamic fundamentalism . I have read about parts of Europe where if any woman walks the streets uncovered , she will be harassed by Muslim men . American Liberals deny all of this because as long as Muslims are anti Christian , that is all they need to know . At any rate this is what is coming to both our Countries .

It would seem to me that basing a thought, moral or otherwise, on a single condition (outside the realm of physics and math) such as “If you are anti-christian, therefore I support you” seems to be a less than ideal way of embracing a policy position.

I have read about parts of the US, where if you exercise your constitutional rights and express atheist point of view, you not only get harassed, but threatened and ostracized as well. I’m pretty sure this is not the case everywhere in the US, but it is troubling none the less. So, men harassing women for dressing “un-islamic” in Europe is problematic, as islam, like christianity, presents a fairly dim view of women and humanity in general.
The problem is that both religions promote an uncritical examination of the world around them and both are substituting dogmatic belief for rationality.

The Arbourist ,
I think being harassed and physically threatened because you are not wearing a burka while walking in a neighborhood that is mostly Muslim is slightly different than sitting through the Lord’s Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance at a High School graduation . But that’s just me. Geeeze , you really got a humongous chip on your shoulder .

The acts are very different; that is evident.
The common thread is that religious norms interfere with the functioning of stable, secular democracy whether it be islam in Europe or christianity in the US.
Shorter: Same poop, different pile.

The Arbourist ,
I dislike your moral equivalence of Christianity’s recitation and Islam’s threats . You mean some poor Atheist cannot sit through a few minutes of Christian prayer ? I had to sit through 45 minutes of some left wing clown speaking at one of my daughters college graduation . He ran down my President and American foreign policy . What this had to do with graduation was beyond my poor understanding . Since I helped pay for this guy with my generous payments to the college, I was deeply offended and bored to tears . But I got over it .
