Oh, those women, they just want to have power over men. Evil feminists that don’t see the FACT that men and women are treated equally now…
Pardon me while I expunge the neurons used to formulate those sentences… *splork*… Ahh…all better. Like it or not, video games are a fairly big part of our culture, and unsurprisingly, the women featured in many video games conform with traditional patriarchal roles.

One thing I’ve noticed about women in combat-oriented video games – they tend to get the best projectile weapons. Yeah, it depends on the game, but it’s probably statistically true that game developers look at the women and think, “how am I going to give her a chance against the hulking male warrior types?” Then they hook them up with lethal arrows, deadly guns, or some kind of nasty projectile power. As a result, dudes often end up playing them if they prefer projectile weaponry. Diablo, Dead Island, and Borderlands 2, are good examples. SkyRim doesn’t really matter much – either gender is about equal no matter which class you select. In Metroid, the protagonist is always female. But, yes, there are plenty of games where the story line follows a typical patriarchal path. Personally, I don’t have a problem with that. Sometimes it’s fun to rescue the princess.

Oh you mean when they are not being ransomed, held captive or generally just being portrayed as beautifully useless? :)
Oh absolutely, but it would be nice to see the prince in danger, or a kickass princess that needs little in the way of rescue.
Well, part 2 apparently is about the more modern games, I’m interested to see her view on the titles she mentioned.
