The more I learn about Quantum Mechanics the more interested I become. The counter-intuitive nature of how the fundamental particles operate requires reliance on the scientific method, there is no other way that we could be making these discoveries (I’m looking at you religion). Enjoy learning about how empty space is actually far from empty.

Derek is the man! Thanks for posting. I’m a little confused, though… which is my normal state of being. Are planck length strings only inside quarks?

So, the old saw about Nature abhorring an (empty) vacuum really IS true!

The strings, if they exist at all would be inside the quarks. String Theory or M theory is a contentious theory right now as the amount of empirical evidence they have is not sufficient yet. String Theorists have a great many working hypothesis and many are mathematically rigourous and coherent but at least at the present time not testable. It is like so yah, we can have 11 (x) different dimensions vibrating at different harmonics…but like..so what? :)
I went through a phase where I was reading much of the non-specialist quantum mechanics stuff, so I know a little bit about what its about, but that is nothing to write home about. Brain Greene, Kip Thorn, Paul Davis and of course, Steven Hawking were very informative reads on the topic.

For once, folk wisdom mirrors scientific fact. :)

Arb, you’re an eclectic champion. Hole filled! Years ago I tried desperately to keep up but it started getting away from me.
Now, I doubt you’re interested, but our friend Prayson actually just did an abortion post which directly attacks the woman’s bodily rights. I was going to stay out of it but saw a comment down the bottom which I just had to bitch-slap. Not sure if I’m going to keep playing, but if you’re bored here’s the playground:

I’m in the same boat, I used to read voraciously, now my pace has slowed down significantly. I blame video games for being so awesome. I’m also a history buff of sorts and if your keen on a good narrative along with a non-offical version of the “facts” of a the matter I would also highly recommend Robert Fisk’s Opus The Great War for Civilisation. A ytube encapsulation here. :)
I’ll take a peek at what our forced birth friend has to say, I haven’t been righteously angry for what..like five minutes now… :>

Is it just me that finds it completely unsurprising that ‘space’ is not empty?

What you mentioned and also the seemingly infinite ways that the religious seem to have for making believing in magic sound palatable.

Believing that space is empty is like a fish believing there is no air. When you believe the universe was created just for you then your vanity has climged to heights such that no sanity can survive, and without it, magic makes complete sense.
