Another reason why we need more science and not less in the world. Where smoking has been accurately depicted as hazardous to your health and society the rate goes down. Other places, not so much.

I smoke, but never in public. It’s part of a writing ritual.

Nasty habit. My parents chucked it. Lots of times. Finally in their seventies. Suspect their doctor may have influenced them, suspect cost was more influential.
Dirt cheap here in Gib, slightly dearer in Spain. Smuggling is a whole nother issue.

Agreed. It was hell on my mother when she decided to quit as well. The smuggling in Canada is problematic as the taxes are very high on cigarettes.
Being right next door to the US where they are much lighter on sin taxes makes for a sizable market differential.

Noted for realities sake, but perhaps not in my mind’s eye of your writing style –
A single overhanging light, a cluttered desk, ashtray and a tumbler of spirits just waiting to be imbibed, maybe a slowly turning ceiling fan too.

When I was living in China, someone quite high up and influential offered me a cigarette at a dinner function. Apparently I offended him greatly when I refused the cancer stick. I was told later that to be successful in business in China, you HAVE to smoke. Boo social pressures to make financial gain dependant on suicidal habits.
