The Intransigent One
A version of this happened to me the only show I ever rode in – just a fun show for students at the barn, nothing fancy. And fences barely tall enough that the horse would have to jump, not just step higher, to get over.
The horse I was riding was in a bad mood and wanted to refuse every obstacle, but I was on the ball and could feel him thinking about running out, and I made him go over. We got a clean round, but not a pretty one – ears back and tail swishing like a pissed-off kitty.
As soon as we finished the course, I let out a deep breath and relaxed – just as the spectators started clapping. Pissed-off horse suddenly decided applause was the scariest thing ever, and spooked. I went flying and hit the arena wall and slid down it cartoon-style. I was fine, and as I stood there brushing the sand off, I heard my mom laughing her butt off.
We got third place!
