Clipped from the Feminist Current article 10 words we should retire in 2017.
“5) Cis/cisgender: This word is just gross. It sounds like a tumour.
But beyond its phonetic unpleasantness, “cis” is also insulting and harmful to women. Women who do not claim to have a special “gender identity” are told they are “cis.” Cis/cisgender is defined as identifying with the “gender you were assigned at birth.” For females, this means they supposedly identify with the feminine gender — aka the oppressive stereotypes that have been traditionally associated with/imposed on the female sex. This is, of course, bullshit. At birth, females are assigned a gendered role synonymous with inferiority and subordination. But just because a woman doesn’t claim to be anything other than a woman, doesn’t mean she “identifies” with her subordination. Women aren’t in this terrible position because it just so happens our personality is that of second-class citizens…”

Meg
“Cis” is another way of saying that women consent to being oppressed. It implies that gender is not socially imposed, therefore it is chosen and that women choose to be born and raised in a world that teaches us from birth to shut up and submit to men no matter what. “Cis” erases any dialogue that addresses the social conditioning women and girls go through, including the sexualization and exploitation of our bodies from a very young age. The idea that women “choose” any of this is repulsive, and it’s pro-rape. Lesbians can also attest to this since heterosexual men can now identify as lesbians and demand to put their penis into women who are otherwise not attracted to men or maleness. It’s like the words “no” and “lesbian” and “consent” don’t mean anything anymore.
The common denominator in “cis” conversations is that males can do whatever they want and women must once again submit to their every whim and fantasy and accommodate males no matter what the cost to us. Anything less is transphobic.
