There is a lot to learn from historical patterns and we are fortunate that many big brained people came before us AND explained their reasoning in written form (a lost art and a loss to modernity that prefers the soundbite, the tweet, the short answer of no depth). Russell is one such gem and the timing of his writings and insights after the rise and fall of various kinds of authoritarianism when compared and contrasted with other writers/artists is especially insightful. The warning signals today may have evolved in shape and style but the principles of why they are warning signals remain ever the same. The latest red flag iteration is the intentional inversion of language (words that mean their opposite meaning like diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, tolerance, progressive, personal truths, gender, personal identities, yada yada yada), while the products of this broken thinking associated with using these terms as justification clearly demonstrate yet again that institutionalizing never-ending grievances produces ever-deepening divisiveness and intolerance. It cannot end well for any civilization that follows this well trod path into self destruction and replacement of its first principles. This is why anti-liberalism in the West matters so damned much and why it’s vital we recognize it – and criticize it – for what it is: anti human.
