I do love me some infographics. Go to Vision of Humanity to see all the stats and the overall peace rankings for countries of the world. Care to guess to see if yours is on the list? I’ve got the top 10 most peaceful countries and the bottom 10 of that same scale below the fold.
“We are living in the most peaceful century in human history; however the 2014 Global Peace Index shows that the last seven years has shown a notable deterioration in levels of peace.”
So begins this year’s peace index, an annual report released by the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace. The study ranks 162 countries (covering 99.6% of the world’s population) according to a complex set of indicators that gauge the absence of violence and political instability. These include a nation’s level of military expenditure, its relations with neighboring countries and the percentage of the population held in prisons.
Most peaceful countries
1. Iceland
2. Denmark
3. Austria
4. New Zealand
5. Switzerland
6. Finland
7. Canada
8. Japan
9. Belgium
10. Norway
Least peaceful countries
1. Syria
2. Afghanistan
3. South Sudan
4. Iraq
5. Somalia
6. Sudan
7.Central African Republic
8. Democratic Republic of the Congo
9. Pakistan
10. North Korea

Oh, wow. I think I could spend all day on that site. Did you happen to check out the “Jailed Population” indicator under Global Peace Index? The USA shares the worst ranking with a very infamous partner. :( This does not make me proud of my country, not at all.

Hell yes, Iceland! My #1 choice, too, if I had the total freedom to move anywhere.

We may get to go on a choir trip to Iceland. TIO and I are excited about the possibility. I’m a fan of soaking in hotsprings and Iceland is pretty much ground zero for that sort of activity. :)

It’s hard, sometimes, to rationalize what we’ve been told about our country of origin and then see, in stark relief, what it actually is. Being Canadian, we are middling on most of the lists, but still have so many social problems to tackle.

How is your hiatus coming? I think I might join you, as my blogging mojo is low at the moment.

Well, the weather is warming up, and i’ll jump back in soon. Been writing up a treatise on the Malevolent Creator, a sort of anti-theism apologetic work, but it’s still all over the shop. Was hoping to have it smoothed out by now, but alas. You should, though, jump out of a pool for a while, Arb. It clears the head marvelously.
