A deliciously wriggling can of worms this topic is. I lean toward the answer being yes, but having rights in our society isn’t a guarantee of justice or fairness. I would hope that by the time sentient AI becomes a thing, we have our own house in order so we can be a good example to our AI children.

Have you read David Brin’s Stone’s of Significance? It dives into this subject in a fascinating way.

What a great read! It uncovers more questions than it answers though. :)

As the best stories must do :) Still, one of the best short stories I’ve ever read.

The day that they can ask for rights without being programmed to do so is the day we will discover that they’ve deserved rights for a long time. Mind you, after Microsoft let their AI loose on twitter I’m not so certain that they will be asking for rights. It seems more likely that Skynet is a closer approximation as to what will happen.
