Laminar flow was a key attribute to the P-51 Mustang fighter of WWII. Before the P-51, Allied fighters lacked the range to escort bombers into the heart of Germany resulting in heavy losses. The P-51’s near laminar flow wing improved lift and reduced drag enough to permit the Mustang to fly further at combat speeds and escort the bombers into Germany and back. It requires a very smooth wing surface. Small obstructions, such as rivet heads, could prevent laminar flow from being achieved. But, yeah, it’s pretty neat.
