You do not need to go to the crusades even. The Vatican employed “troops” who were empowered to kill anyone the considered a heretic/witch/etc. with no trial or other test. There are representations of these actions in various artworks. (I wish I kept an example of one but I did not.) Apparently whenever such a troop approached a village, the people in the village scattered as they had no recourse to any action these “troops” took.
