Hi. I was reading an old post, about heteronormativity and your use of toe rings, and the only reason I can see is so you can consider yourself to be beyond the norms. I guess it’s the same reason for using tattoos, just as 40 years ago it was the reason to dress in the punk fashion. What people who deviate from the norm don’t see is that there’s so many doing the same that they fall in a different norm, be it punk rockers, tattooed skins, or toe ring users. Have a nice day.

I do not consider myself to be beyond the norms. It is an observation that coheres with the reality of the situation. Not choosing to follow gender norms is indeed a choice, and for me it reflects my politics and view of the world. If being gender non-conforming is ‘cool’, I guess that is an unintended side benefit.
