Working on holidays on campus is always a rewarding and edifying experience. I get to meet the upcoming best and brightest students that our fair institution produces for Alberta. However, the building I work at is closed today, as it is a long weekend holiday.
“But how Arbourist, are people getting into a locked building?” my inquisitive audience asks.
Good question padawan, I mostly blame the radio station that also shares this building as they have staff that is going in and out all the time. No big deal. However, the front doors were recently renovated and I think that whomever did the measuring did not have their morning coffee because they stop and stick just short of the locking mechanism.
Consistently.
I assume this is where the Grand Axis of the Universe managed to gain entry to my fair building. After using the facilities he and his partner were summarily greeted by yours truly and asked to kindly leave, as it was a holiday and the building was closed.
I swear, it was like I was in my dodge-ball days again, twisting and turning but now only verbally.
“Where am I supposed to study?”
“I have a study group to attend and I need a space to do so!”
“I pay for the operation of this building, why can’t I use it?”
“Is there anyway to withdraw my student union fees? I need to use the building and clearly I’m not being allowed.”
Now gentle reader, I have some time behind me in the service industry (not to mention special education), and dealing with assholes is a useful skill one acquires over the years. The important thing is to empathize, or at least appear to empathize with the AIQ’s (asshole in question) concerns, then offer useful alternatives, but maintain the message you need to get across, namely you my dear dear AIQ need to GTFO out of my building, post haste. The AIQ’s companion had obviously been down this road before, and she mouthed her apologies and resignedly shrugged as we exchanged glances. She smiled as I arched my eyebrow and rolled my eyes at AIQ’s entitlement fail.
They left, and I had to just stand for awhile and process the twerpitude that had just been performed for my benefit. It was inspiring to share the magnitude of the naive cluelessness of our dear AIQ. He genuinely felt wronged by the University for having the audacity to close the building on holiday weekend disrupting his study plans.
Boo-frakking-hoo.
AIQ is under the false assumption that the powers that be give a rats ass about his bullshite undergraduate work and that anything he produces during his undergrad counts for anything meaningful. You just do not understand how balls to bones sincere AIQ was, this was near life and death. The sheer magnitude of his whingeing set AIQ in a class all by himself (I hope). Stern letters, at the very least, would be written!
It was like the Ivy Tower educated snob stereotype anti-intellectuals like to paint came to life and manifested all the bullshite priggish entitlement crap that makes the average person cranky.
I do like to think of myself as a intellectual (of sorts), and therefore I offer an apology for AIQ’s behaviour as I now can understand the need to throttle people who actually act like this.
Hey, if it worked in 1955 why shouldn’t it apply now…?
*headdesk*
I write this post out of a shared personal experience with a religiously addled graduate from university. Let’s call him, to be charitable, douche-nozzle or DN for short. As with most of the risibly sanctimonious religious turds out there DN believes he has a relevant, informed opinion on a myriad of topics. It must be nice to be able to answer the hard questions of life with the unctuous “goddidit” and not be laughed out of the room by your peers. DN seems to think that he can bloviate on about Especially Easy to understand topics ones Feminism and Post Modernism. Now DN, with his above average score in verbal rectaltude decided to strike up a conversation with my partner based on the All-Star thesis that “feminists have “gone too far” and really need to take a hard look at the direction of their movement.
Feminism has gone too far… Oh ya right! Magically, since DN was warming up to mansplain exactly how frakking peachy the womenz have it now. DN, despite a few inconvenient facts such as that the patriarchy, rape culture, rape, the pro-kyriarchy biased social, economic and political systems, not to mention ingrained cultural misogyny and….et cetera are still all going on full stream, began to explain how right the world was and how feminism had gone wrong. It was as if all the institutions that enslave, depreciate and and destroy women somehow disappeared, seemingly overnight and more importantly, are inconsequential because he is white and male and he frakking says so.
DN carries his privilege well. He is middle class and literally has both sides of the family falling over him to ensure a soft landing in what we like to call reality. One of his more egregious assumptions is that Intransigentia is just a mere girl and therefore does not have much going on in the grey matter. Not many things can be further from the truth. She possesses a quick wit and near encyclopedic memory of facts and argumentation which she often calls upon to dissect and dismember fuckwittery of a much greater calibre than DN could ever hope to offer.
DN got lucky though, as my parter was bereft of sleep and had a magnitude 8 headache. Even with her size 8 brain packed into a size five skull she put an end DN’s douchery. Simply by asking which feminist authors he was referring to and to back up his claim with some sort of reasonable example. It was amazing to watch how fast the conversation shifted.
“Uh-oh this one uses her lady-brain for more than just house cleaning, praising jebus, and bearing children to brainwash in order to propagate the frakking bloody car-wreak that is christianity.” – I’m sure this didn’t cross DN’s mind, but I’d like to give his withered rationality at least the benefit of the doubt.
I look forward to the day when the Feminist movement is no longer necessary. I work toward furthering the rights of women and educating people about the assumptions they take for granted, that necessarily hurt women but remain unexamined. There is a long way to go, I just hope we can take another step by firmly slapping down the mealy mouthed privileged mendacity that regularly spews forth from mouths of people like DN.
The Catholic Church is mired in yet another anti-woman scandal.
via NBC – “PHOENIX – A nun and administrator at a Catholic hospital in Phoenix has been reassigned and rebuked by the local bishop for agreeing that a severely ill woman needed an abortion to survive.
Sister Margaret McBride was on an ethics committee that included doctors that consulted with a young woman who was 11 weeks pregnant late last year, The Arizona Republic newspaper reported on its website Saturday. The woman was suffering from a life-threatening condition that likely would have caused her death if she hadn’t had the abortion at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.”
Wow, do we need another reason to shit-can the mystical bullshit that pervades our society? Yet another case of backward, unhinged, delusional thinking attempting to corrupt and trump reality in the 21st century. The Nun in question, followed her own personal ethics, as opposed to the rancid 2000 year old wisdom of burning bushes and talking snakes. She made the correct evidence based decision. Her commitment to reason is to be commended, and of course free thinking in the musty halls of religion gets you punished:
“Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, head of the Phoenix Diocese, indicated in a statement that the Roman Catholic involved was “automatically excommunicated” because of the action. The Catholic Church allows the termination of a pregnancy only as a secondary effect of other treatments, such as radiation of a cancerous uterus.”
“I am gravely concerned by the fact that an abortion was performed several months ago in a Catholic hospital in this diocese,” Olmsted said in a statement sent to The Arizona Republic. “I am further concerned by the hospital’s statement that the termination of a human life was necessary to treat the mother’s underlying medical condition.”
Ah yes, because of your funny hat and the rotten sepulchre of a religion that supports your fantasy based point of view enables you to punish people for saving lives. The Bishop of Bullshit continues:
“An unborn child is not a disease. While medical professionals should certainly try to save a pregnant mother’s life, the means by which they do it can never be by directly killing her unborn child. The end does not justify the means.”
Huh, well if then this is not a pillar for Catholic women to frakking rally around then let us distill it down a bit further to ‘clarify the message’.
“If a woman grows weary and at last dies from childbearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing, she is there to do it.” –Martin Luther.
Now this is a quote that women can get behind. All aboard the train straight back into the shitz and giggles known as the Dark Ages! We need to get back to a time where Bishop Frothing in the Mouth Crazy has some real power. The malodorous drivel oozing from this rectal polyp of human being is matched only by the unctuous waves of support for his position wafting through the spinelessly uncritical anti-choice wankosphere . Okay okay, I digress. Back to the real world where evidence does matter…
“The patient, who hasn’t been identified, was seriously ill with pulmonary hypertension. The condition limits the ability of the heart and lungs to function and is made worse, possibly even fatal, by pregnancy.
“This decision was made after consultation with the patient, her family, her physicians, and in consultation with the Ethics Committee, of which Sr. Margaret McBride is a member,” the hospital said in a statement issued Friday.”
Thank you medical science, thank you rationality, for showing us the correct solution in this case. We need to banish the fucking voodoo magical crap that masquerades in our society as religion. This case finely illustrates how morally bankrupt the RCC is and how out to lunch religion is in general.
H/T to Pharyngula.
The Alberta government is lowering royalty rates for the gas and oil industry. It is a bold initiative, that will bring jobs, prosperity and pink frakking Unicorns back to our lovely province. Apparently the old royalty review was just too darn hard on the industry.
We have just spent the last year and a half recovering from the last bout of fiscal looting and pillaging brought on by the business class so it is right about time to lower government revenue because we need less money, not more, to fund out starving public sector. Great Scott we need to close a few more schools and hospitals as right now we are falling behind in the race to the bottom.
The paucity of morals and commitment to the people of Alberta is vomit-worthy. Honestly, could the kowtowing and subservience to the Oil Patch be any more blatant? This is not even the right question.
The million dollar question is will people actually give a flying flaming hoop about how they are being sold down the river by our government and will they care enough to vote the PC’s out of office?
Oh, by the way the competition review was written by the Gas and Oil Industry. Certainly a fair shake for all Albertans. If you read closely you can actually hear the smirk and audacious tone Mr.Collyer uses.
Dave Collyer, head of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers:
“I think it was a significant step forward in restoring investor confidence in Alberta and I think that makes it a good day for not just the industry but for Albertans. This is really about getting investment back into the province, getting Alberta back in the game and that creates activity and that drives jobs and that’s good for the province overall. So I think it was a positive announcement in both tone and substance. So we’re encouraged by it but we’ve got a ways to go yet in terms of getting the industry fully back on its feet.”
Contrast this with what Amy Taylor has to say from the Pembina Institute:
Amy Taylor, senior economist with the Pembina Institute:
“First and foremost, we have concerns with the process that the provincial government embarked upon in which they came to the conclusion that they needed to make adjustments to the royalty scheme applicable to oil and gas in Alberta and more specifically, they made that decision based on conversations and meetings and negotiations that they had over the course of the last several months with industry and industry alone. And we’re talking about a resource that is owned by Albertans. The citizens of this province own the resource and it’s imperative in our opinion that they be consulted when these kind of changes are being considered.”
Transparency and the interests of the people of Alberta have always been low on Ed Stelmach’s list of things to do, but this is just outright pillaging. And for what? Because the Wild Rose Fascists are undermining the government from the Right? You bet it is. Albertans are getting a dry splintery broomstick in the anus, in regards to resource royalties, because the quavering lick-spittle progressive conservatives are afraid of alienating their ‘base’ and will not stand up for the peoples’ interests.
The people of Alberta need to put a stop to these shenanigans, the sooner the better.
