Twisty, from the blog I Blame the Patriarchy opines on the recent passage of the healthcare bill in the US with the Stupack amendment:
“What I’m getting at is this: my lack of surprise at this Stupak shit proceeds from irrefutable evidence that state ownership of women is among the most beloved of our violent culture’s violent traditions. Social conservatives appear to believe that God made patriarchy in his own image, and that he will withdraw his complimentary concierge services and cancel Christmas, NASCAR, and life everlasting if the state stops oppressing women for even one second. So-called progressives just want uninterrupted access to pussy.”
I lack the the colourful verbiage that Twisty uses, but in this quote she deftly describes the atrocious nature of this particular amendment.
Abortion is not a crime in Canada. Abortion is under siege by anti-choice zealots, par for the course, but a good portion Canadian women have access to reproductive health services.
A woman’s right to make reproductive decisions is foundational in women being recognized as autonomous beings. It is paramount that we keep abortion, safe, legal, and accessible in Canada.
As far as I am concerned the Stupak Amendment is one compromise too far.

Criminalizing abortion will not stop abortion. Never has, never will. Make it illegal, and women will start dying again in serious numbers. And when a woman is rushed to emergency bleeding out from a botched abortion, wonder if she’ll be charged with a crime? The “choice” will have become choosing between medical help and arrest. Nice.

Agreed Moe. The anti-choicers would float the canard that they are saving lives. They most explicitly are not. They are denuding the rights of women to make reproductive decisions about their body.
The doctor, Henry Morgentaler who helped women so much in Canada was given the Order of Canada. Anti-woman nutbags recently went to court to have his OoC stripped from him. Thankfully they failed miserably. Check out the thread that details the stunning victory for female autonomy in Canada at Unrepentantoldhippie’s blog.

Of course it’s not about saving lives – it’s about women having – God Forbid!!! – actual sex. And even worse, apparently enjoying it. This cannot stand.
And sadly there are well meaning people who’ve been pulled aboard this train who have no clue about the Puritan elders who are leading them.
Keep alert in Canada Arb; these people never give up and I seriously fear they’re going to win it here one of these days.
