Qualia Soup continues his series on Morality with a look at the bible and why it is not the place to go when looking for morality. At fourteen minuets it is long by youtube standards, but well worth watching.

The Bible is often misunderstood (mostly by christians). I will not dispute the charge that the Bible is not the place to go for morality…in the Old Testament. Neither will I contend that one can find morality only in the New Testament. But I will contest the notion that christians are at a moral disadvantage by adhering to New Testament teachings. Also, many of the scriptures used in the video to cast the Bible (New Testament in particular) in a negative light were not meant to be taken literally. Now as to which passages are meant in a figurative sense and which passages are meant in a literal sense, that is left up to the reader(and is ultimately why there exist so many denominations within christianity).

“as to which passages are meant in a figurative sense and which passages are meant in a literal sense, that is left up to the reader”
Gee, that’s not dangerous, because no one would ever take ‘thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” literally….oh wait…no they do that. Killed a lot of people in horrible ways….
But at least it would never allow people to justify slavery…oh shit, no. They do that too.
But it would never lead parents to forgo simple medical procedures because they take the power of prayer literally, thereby condemning their children to painful deaths…Oh fuck…that happens too.
Now that I think about it, this practice of ‘leaving it up to the reader’ has resulted in the most horrific things that plague society, past and present. One would have thought an omniscient author would have foreseen that and put down some clearer instructions.
I mean, I would think of that, and I’m no where near omniscient.
I guess I’m just smarter than the god of the bible. Does that mean I get tithes now?

Yes, unfortunately, the Bible has been used as an excuse by many to do evil. The misinterpretation of the Bible to inspire racism, murder, homophobia, and other social faux pas of our time is an unfortunate and inconvenient truth.
However, let me say this…
You count yourself to be an open minded and rational person. And as such, surely you would not suggest that just because something has the potential to be used for evil, that necessarily makes it evil.
From the drug addict that found deliverance, to the depressed man who found new life, faith in the Bible and it’s teachings have inspired many to rise above their perceived limitations and walk on water, figuratively speaking.
