Thank you! Since I saw a lengthy blog post complaining about an “artform” and “cinema experience” being ruined by the rustling of snack and popcorn papers….to the point that the poor horror film aficionado had to WALK out movie unwatched…I’d say some perspective is in order.

I think this is too similar to the “your dissent should be silenced because others have it much harder” Dawkins style of arguing against feminism. I know that’s not how you meant it, but I think it’s altogether too easy to go from one to the other.

I would argue that there isn’t much in the horror genre to be an aficionado about. Watching people being killed in gruesome ways is not something one should aspire to become a connoisseur of.
Agreed. Given the digital nature of entertainment these days one can choose a venue that is without distraction. It is a trade off when you to the movies, because rest assured, there will always be asshats who think that talking during a film is normal behaviour.

It is a delicate instrument and I do agree with you that it would be easy to abuse. Those without knowledge of power gradients and the structure of society could, very easily, use the images to ‘punch down’ and be dismissive toward the legitimate concerns of others.

Pretty much; I go to maybe one or two films a year in theaters….home IS better. I can BUY most films if I desire on i-tunes cheaper than the ticket price for two.
And I can be as “aficionado” as I want with my favorite alcoholic beverage and much cheaper snacks. Thus, the idea that perspective is a lost art(form) of its very own!
