I think Rick might have a point. What sort of person would continue to vote for Mayor with Mr.Ford’s reputation? It is quite beyond my reckoning.

Well put Rick. Although I am reveling in his discomfort. A little schadenfreude shall we call it? My favorite is when he ran over that 60ish counselor, my quote on facebook was “And people though Rob Ford would never run again”.
I honestly think Rick is simplifying things a bit and falling into a typical liberal trap where you insult the people who have/would vote for that person. All that does is solidify peoples mindset about who they will vote for because it becomes an us versus them type of thing. And unfortunately, people watch Rick, a lot of people. People who are swing voters and could be persuaded to vote this guy out of office. These types of insults to the common swing voter aren’t helping and are the reason why Ford will win the next election and for similar reasons why Harper will win the next 2 to 3 elections.

So we shouldn’t hold Ford to account for his actions? His false populism and common man appeal have managed to avert his immediate sacking as a public representative – treatment that other ‘egghead’ politicians would never receive, nor expect.
Rob Ford has been on the lie and deny road for months and should be held to account for his actions and if not for his ‘populist appeal’ would have been history long ago.
When Canada is thoroughly privatized and under the corporate boot I’m sure the demographics that elected (and continue to elect) them will be dancing in the streets.
Criticizing voters for making abysmal choices shouldn’t be off the table how would else will they learn? If Ford Nation wants Toronto represented my Cokee McCrackhead more power to them – then in good ole’ conservative rhetoric – you live with the consequences of your actions.

Not what I said. I said we should not be insulting the very people we need to ensure he doesn’t get elected again. Please do hold Ford accountable, just don’t insult the very people who you need to get him out of office.
Creating an us versus them mentality is only a smart strategy if you are on the winning side, and right now I am living under a conservative town council (in small town Alberta), a conservative provincial government and a conservative federal government. Us versus them right now is a losing strategy. Bridges need to be built and you can’t do that with a flaming torch. I just think that if we want to enact change, we need to be convincing people why they should vote for our ideals not insulting them for voting for someone else’s .
Honestly, I get the want to criticize others for their voting patterns. I really do. Its just not a good way to get your party into office. It’s counterproductive. I think the criticism should be laid upon the actual politicians and the policies that they enact, not those who voted for them. I think the dialogue with the average voter should be focused on demonstrating how neocon policies have hurt them and their neighbors and how our policies will actually help them and everyone.
I dunno, maybe I’m wrong.

I reread your comment and this one. I can see what you are saying a little better now.
I think a little space for ‘wtf were they/are thinking’ is appropriate given the farcical lengths being taken by Ford to stay in power.
It is completely galling to see some dude plead for forgiveness and understanding when the policies and mannerisms he puts forward in office have not a shred of the non-judgmental panacea that he is asking for when he has the short end of the stick.
Social and fiscal responsibility eh? So sayeth the drunk driver and coke-head. You would think that a conservative voter would not try and square that particular circle between what they purport to believe and their dude in action.
The lure of the negative campaign is strong Bleat, but what you said is absolutely correct.
I fear that here in Alberta, progressive politics are almost a lost cause – nothing will change until the oil runs out – too many high rollers right now that suppress and dissuade the progressive point of view in public discourse.
It is a good idea, but it isn’t enough. What happened in Kansas has/is happening here. Evidence based decision making is on the wane in society and we all will suffer for it.
I don’t think so Bleat, I think you are very right on this one. :)
