An exciting update on my recent post on solar roadways. Scott and Julie have an Indiegogo campaign (like kickstarter, but not) and they were looking for $1 million to fund production of their solar roadway hexagons. They have made their goal with a few days left and are currently just under $1.3 million. This is happening! And in case my last article didn’t quite express how awesome this all is, check their new vid.

Fascinating stuff! I saw something that is applied to roads/stones etc. that I’ve forgotten the name of — how I wished I could afford to apply it to my labyrinth! OF course, lol, here where the sun seems NOT to shine for about half the year…it might be a lost cause.

You have a labyrinth? I want a labyrinth! Ohh! Ohh! I could use the pressure sensors in these panels to activate traps! “Oh, you would like to talk to me about Jesus and how traditional families must be protected? Sure, join me in my….yard. Yes, that’s it, right through there. The ground will lead you through.”

Great stuff.
Our favourite Mormon left you an essay, Arb. It’s getting painful. He won’t leave the thread alone.

Oh sweet jebus, now he’s after evolutionary theory.

This is your fault John, you keep inviting me over to poke at the various hornet nests that seem to take up residence in your threads. :)

I’m of the opinion he must be a new inmate in some low security jail somewhere (white collar crime) looking to pass the time.

LOL. :> I have a lunch date, but I’m reading his murky obfuscation of a post right now, I’ll respond later in the afternoon.

This sounds interesting, but it occurs to me right away that currently runoff from plowed roads gets absorbed into the boulevards and yards, and doesn’t all go into the sewer system. I’m not convinced that collecting constant melt from roadways and overloading a sewage system is a great idea. I’m also not convinced that the LED lights are great — do they only go on when there is pressure? Is it easier to drive with a low light source? How would a 2 hour night drive on a busy highway compare in terms of road fatigue with the lower light source? I’d want to have answers to that before buying into the LED aspect.

As the current sewer system has to deal with an entire winter’s worth of snow in few weeks, I would think spreading that load over the entire winter will only make snow easier to bear
According to their FAQ section, the LEDs can be dimmed or turned off and can be programmed to respond to pressure.
“Is it easier to drive with a low light source?”
Well, on some roads, they would be the only light source, so that would be a big yes. On lit roads, I don’t think they would just up and remove street lights. With the dimming capabilities in the road, an effective balance between the two shouldn’t be too hard to work out. Additionally, the street lights could be powered and controlled through the road.

I live in Winnipeg. We’re big on snow and worrying about flooding. The piles of snow at the side of the road on the boulevards, all 6 to 7 feet high on my street this year — crazy stuff, the snow is on grass. Some, but not nearly all, goes down a drain. Plus, it gets absorbed over a period of a couple of weeks. Plus, crikey, frozen pipes by the thousands here this winter. Those runoff sewers will need to be heated too. What does having a roadway and area around it at 2 degrees do at -40? Have we then got ice fog? I love the idea, but I like to see it in a more moderate climate and take notes.

The plan is definitely to start small and expand, learning and refining as they go, starting with things like driveways and bike paths. Even if there is a bit of a drainage issue to work out, it seems a much lesser evil than all the accidents due to icy roads.
