“Women feel more guilt than men, not because of some weird chromosomal issue but because they have a history of being blamed for other people’s behaviour. You get hit, you must have annoyed someone; you get raped, you must have excited someone; your kid is a junkie, you must have brought him up wrong”
— Germaine Greer, Guilt Poisons Women

Guilt is a result of blame (ref: Adam and Eve with God in Eden – the classic and biggest double guilt trip ever that rolls on and continues to cause so much pain and harm) and blame is used as justification for control and abuse and often even leads to genocide. It is certainly the underlying cause of domestic abuse and misogyny. The feeling of guilt is totally disempowering and debilitating. If your abuser is automatically “right” how can you defend yourself?

Women need to reject the blame and resulting guilt that others try to cast onto them. Yes, it would be even better if they stopped doing that, but I am not holding my breath. We have a choice in our feelings.

[We have a choice in our feelings] Yes, we do, or I would qualify that by saying, we have a choice on how we deal with the emotions resulting from those feelings. “Others” will never stop blaming women for whatever; they’re too convenient a scapegoat, it’s too handy and too lucrative a concept. For women to live as equal members of society on all levels you have to completely remove basic selfishness from that society. Selfishness, however, has been elevated to the status of virtue in our capitalistic world.
