Jesus
True that. Can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone bitching about their feelings. The place is lousy with trigger-happy pearl-clutchers. Pretty silly.
Certainly some gripes are legit. But when people whine and cry it’s really an appeal to mob mentality: manipulating the feelings of a group of people to come to their defense. It’s something weasels can use to their advantage.
I’m all about living in the world of ideal forms. So I believe in free thought and free speech in the free-market place of ideas.
(In a true developing democracy – like what the Athenians had for 4 centuries before Alexander the No-So-Great destroyed it – bad ideas are easily rejected. It’s only when people’s feelings are being manipulated, en masse, that bad ideas can be brought to power – by people who want to do rotten things from above the fray of democracy.)
The only time a person is truly offended is when they believe an offensive idea is to some degree true.
Then they have the option: they can take the information to heart and adapt to it; or choose to live a lie.
Me, I think atheists are crazy meatheads. They can feel the void in their bones. So they become convinced of their rotten feelings and take them to the level of a source of divine, omniscient authority. Then they become like Medieval Christians on a crusade to eradicate all false thinking!
But our evolved animal instincts can only tell us about our local physical and social ecology. They can’t give us much information about what is beyond.
And certainly things exist beyond. Like the world of ideas: the world of math. “The Mind of God.”
This is based on the idea that what exists is true and what is true exists. ‘2 + 2 = 4’ exists. ‘2 + 2 = 5’ does not. The truth exists and never changes and is therefore eternal. Lies are things that do not exist.
Some people think ‘2 + 2 = 4’ is something real in and of itself. Others think it’s just a rule to use to gather resources to feed their instincts.
What is bred in the bone comes out in the flesh: Stockholm Syndrome and nihilism. Savage patriarchs have been breeding us to adapt to savagery for 60,000 years. But it doesn’t mean the universe is savage. It just means they are.
But we can all transcend!
