Why should anyone necessarily give the parents a total free pass in what they, in some way one at least gets the impression from — don’t ‘ya think(?), are conditioning *their* own kid(s) toward becoming susceptible to believing in?
The culture of the home now; either of the mother being on anti-depressants obsessed with Pinterest or the father acting like a Neanderthal with a sideways baseball hat that never grew-up beyond seeming like he’s a 12 y.o (REGARDLESS OF ECONOMIC STATUS), IS a factor everybody just wants to brush under the carpet while: their children are spoiled-headcase literal “Damians” (example: a younger couple who live nextdoor to us fits THAT EXACT description to. the. absolute. letter — three kids all under the age of 10: father, 30-ish, dresses like he’s stuck in high school; mother, same, chain smokes on their backyard deck like you wouldn’t believe it was possible for someone/anyone under 70 to think is normal!; eldest son — diagnosed autistic, she once mentioned it to me while we were in front of our yards together, and: you can see that this kid is a monstrous ticking timebomb A-MILE-AWAY).
I never became a parent (and, certainly, I realize this isn’t the 1970s anymore re: equating my own childhood); *however*, I’d like to think(?): maybe seeing my Dad work a blue collar factory job for 35 years (on a rotating weekly three different shift) to make sure the mortgage was paid every month and my Mom watching me do homework at the kitchen table (or: Mom/Grandma/Aunt/any of them, at the time — preventing me from falling into eating disorders when the ’80s Dance craze happened and I HATED my body at 16). Maybe(?). Just maybe(?): being raised by people (of a generation) with actual SENSE determines how you turn out. I, for one, don’t see it as a matter of political co-option these jingoistic “think tanks” try to frame it as. Honestly: a lot of them sound like another layer of self-righteous LOBBYISTS commodifying precisely what they purport to oppose.
