I’m tired of being lied to by the Left and the Right.
It’s been a rough couple of years for me as I’ve been riding a bit of a roller-coaster when it comes to demarcating my political position and adopting a cognitive frame in which to reasonably process the world.
Talk about unintended veracity.
I come from a academic traditional left background. My blog started in 2009 and I published a paper (self-published) which I wrote for one of my sociology classes (sociology of the family). Here is my preface and conclusion from my paper.
“One of the dominant themes of the course was the gendered assumptions our society is based on. Like the Matrix, until you are shown what it is, you really do not understand it. One of the conditions of the paper was that I had to use a pop culture piece to illustrate how heteronormativity works in our culture. I chose the cartoon ‘Family Guy’ because it is a very offensive show and I was sure I would find heteronormative gold when I analyzed a couple of episodes. Sadly, I was correct…

“If “Family Guy” were truly edgy, the so-called deviant vignettes and their radical take on society would be the norm instead of the cutaway gags, but then the show would be unmarketable. Heteronormative assumptions, like media functions of Chomsky’s model, serve the dominant patriarchal interests. Therefore, the authors of the show would either bend to the wishes of the institutional will, or they would be out of a job as producers of a cartoon. In reality “Family Guy” is a safe cartoon from the patriarchal point of view as it amplifies the correct heteronormative assumptions (albeit very crudely) and intensifies the ‘othering’ of competing non-patriarchal based narratives. Similarly, news that is outside of the dominant acceptable paradigm or boundaries of debate is marginalized or simply ignored by the mass media. In both cases, the interests of the powerful institutions are served and alternative views are either marginalized or ignored. Therefore, “Family Guy” as a cartoon may poke fun at heteronormative values, but by its very nature must endorse and propagate an ‘acceptable’ version of the dominant patriarchal norms to continue to be successful in the mass media.”
Oh sweet jebus. Just look at the conflict theory in action – over a popular cartoon no less. I received top grade for this paper – I worked hard on ii – but ‘wow wow wow’ the frame I was using was problematic. Before we get to comparisons, let’s get a few more data points.

Did I take the time to really understand the rational behind what Crisis Pregnancy Centres were doing. Absolutely not. They were part of the religious right, and the religious right in my cognitive frame were an irredeemable source of EVIL (and patriarchy, we mustn’t forget patriarchy).

Men without families and heirs could not build empires (or even working farms) and without this centralized, religiously-sanctioned consolidation of the family, the state could not have evolved. The state then effectively empowered men to be women’s keepers until very very recently in human history.
THIS is the origin of women’s oppression.”
Yep. The feminist streak here at DWR runs deep and wide – but then a funny little bit of legislation happened in Canada – Bill C-16. And then the wide feminist river began to narrow into a direct defense of females as a distinct political and social class in society as Bill C-16 codified the unfalsifiable notion of Gender Identity into our Charter of Rights.

Is the onus on women to suddenly forget everything they know and have experienced with regard to sexual violence, sexual harassment, and the male gaze simply because one individual wishes to have access to the female change room? Because one boy claims he “feels like a girl on the inside?” And what does that mean, anyway?”
So which is more important male gender feelings or female safety? I would like to advocate here for gender neutral washrooms/changing area as the beginning of a compromise in this area. We still live in a patriarchy and sex segregated facilities are still necessary for the protection and safety of females in our society. The choice whether to co-mingle with men in washrooms or change rooms should be up to all those involved.”
It was a watershed moment for me. Gender-magic suddenly, was made a part of our Charter of Rights and the resulting bullshit was quite beyond the pale as female rights, boundaries, and safety continue to be curtailed and rolled back up here in Canada. It is 2023 now, and push-back against the tide of regressive gender ideology has a reasonable start, but we still have a long way to go as most of our government institutions are thoroughly captured by this insidious ideology.

Do not believe your eyes, but rather what some individual says about who they are. Yeah, the gloves have come off and up till the present it has been a journey that has seen my reject my ideological left leaning beginnings. The argument can be made that since 2015 the Left has hit the crazy button and, in many cases, simply left former supporters and adherents politically homeless. The rise of Radical Activist Leftism (queer theory based gender ideology, the misogyny that is Transactivism, BLM, the so called anti-fascists et al.) has left me so cold toward my former home on the left. So I went looking and much to my chagrin the “Right” isn’t much better. So started to lean into some of the bugbears the Right chases. For example,identity politics –
“Identity politics sow division and strife within society. We need to revisit the idea that we are all Canadians first and foremost. We come in all different shapes, beliefs, and abilities. Those differences and the acceptance of our actual diversity is what makes Canada a wonderful place to live and prosper.
“I’m pleased that in 2023 LGBT people can be themselves in public, and that there is zero tolerance for bullying in schools and workplaces. That said, I’m starting to worry that some LGBT people are becoming the new bullies.”
“People see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear” – signed *EVERYONE* on twitter. It was late 2018 that I started to lean harder into twitter as a social media outlet., and to be honest, it has had negative effect on my writing here on DWR. Sparing with others, getting the dopamine hit from winning a successful snipe argument, the format of the short tweet all sap the intentionality and nuance of writing and thinking in complete descriptive thought. I was necessary though folks; January 2018 was when my marriage went pear-shaped and what I thought was a partnership for life turned out to be a much more temporary experience. Amiable and all that, but my mental resources available at the time were MUCH more suited to Twitter than the long form essay. Twitter also has a way to weave a quasi-net of acceptance and understanding to your particular points of view and preferred ideologies, it is rather alluring to be perfectly honest.
The silos present there at first confirmed my left bias, but then led by the likes of James Lindsay and his podcasts from The New Discourses I embarked on a journey to the right, or at least centre-right.
Lindsay, one of the authors of the Grievance Studies Affair, has taken it upon himself to combat the what he describes as the encroachment and capture of our cultural institutions by Cultural Marxist ideologues. Lindsay has topics ranging from grooming in schools to DEI training to the Sustainable Development Goals. The picture he assiduously paints is one of a long subtle Communist march through the Western institutions with the goal of overthrowing Western values and unfurling the new collectivist revolution. He unpacks concepts the Left is based on – and it is an impressive intellectual shortcut, but ultimately a shortcut it is. The picture you take away from him, despite his charitable efforts (sometimes) is fairly negative view of the evolution of Marxist and how it affects society now. There is no shortcut around grappling with the texts and thoughts of thinkers (on the right and the left) that have shaped and are shaping our reality.
You listen to him – he’s at his most persuasive when he’s reading a primary source from the other side – whether it be the record of the Combahee River Collective or the works of Paulo Friere or Herbert Marcuse – the work he’s amassed and digested into a reasonable format is impressive. Impressive enough to build a hollow cognitive frame around… one could say.
On reflection, I think I’ve learned a fair amount about the topics that I had little or vague knowledge about. What I haven’t done is yet is to formulate a coherent cognitive frame that makes sense of my dual experience of being on the Left (and then having being discarded by the current bullshit activist left) and embracing some of the ideas and notions that are ascribed to the Right.
I need answers.
I’ve read Noam Chomsky’s keystone works on media and media production – Manufacturing Consent. The well spring of evidence points to a distinct conservative take in the news media. Yet, the Herbert Marcuse’s thesis of Repressive Tolerance is an artifact in society in which I have witnessed happening. Did you see all the articles in the media about how they are putting males into female prisons and how dangerous that is for the female prisoners? No?
Me either.
Not a fucking peep.
Make it all make sense!
You would think that such a infringement on female rights and safety would have our Left media up in arms… But not a peep. CBC, The Toronto Star, Counterpunch nothing. NOTHING. The bullshit they do run though is the ideological drivel that is being vomited into society by the Activist Left – because somehow male gender feelings outweigh female rights, boundaries, and safety in society (in the name of tolerance, diversity,and inclusion no less).
Where do you find the stories of women fight back and reclaiming their rights, spaces, and sports? News organizations on the RIGHT. Stories about Riley Gaines (who was forced to compete against the male Lia Thomas in swimming) appear on Fox News. The toxicity of gender ideology or really just discussing it has only appeared in the rightward National Post and never in the Left Globe and Mail. What the actual hell is going on – why is the media I was taught to distrust and malign suddenly become the only avenue of reasonable argument and debate that is allowed in mass communications? The whole media situation really cooks my noodle :/.

Do you ever feel that older cities are just more interesting than new ones?
Well, it isn’t just because they’re old.
It’s because of something called “vernacular architecture”…
What makes the cobbled streets of York so charming? Or the jettied houses of Plovdiv? Or the terraced villages of Bhutan? Or the round tulou houses of Fujian?
The answer is vernacular. What is it? Well, vernacular clearly isn’t a specific style of architecture.
Before industrial mass-production, rigorous town planning, bureaucratised building regulations, architecture schools, and engineering degrees…
…things were built according to local needs and constraints and traditions, using locally available materials.
So vernacular is a *way* of building.
And it’s how most things were built for most of history, all around the world.
Whether Shibam in Yemen or Dinan in France, both were built without architects and engineers who were “professional” in the modern sense.
But how did focus on need (function) and available building materials (convenience/cost) make these old places all look so different?
Such principles also underpin most modern construction, and yet cities around the world look more similar than ever.
There’s a few key differences. One is that “available building materials” used to mean something very different.
Whereas now steel and concrete and glass are globally available and ubiquitous construction materials, that wasn’t the case in the past.
People used whatever they could, be it marble, bamboo, limestone, pine, mudbricks, slate, turf, oak, clay, reeds…
What was available as a construction material varied from region to region, hence a natural variety in regional architectures.
Another difference is that less globalised (and less nationalised) cultures tend to produce highly localised, more divergent styles.
How the problem of needs versus resources was solved differed immensely from region to region, simply because they were less interconnected.
And that’s why traditional architecture varies so wildly.
Each region and culture found its own way of doing things, according to local needs, traditions, and constraints.
Hence why you can (often) tell which region or country you’re in simply by its buildings.
This sort of carefully tuned regionalism doesn’t explain everything, however.
Another important factor is that there weren’t as many government-imposed restrictions on how houses should be built or towns should be planned.
People just got on with it…
…thus producing the opposite of a planned town with homogenised architecture and standardised streets.
When lots of people do lots of different things with relatively little oversight over the course of several decades or centuries, the result is a street layout like this.
Then again, though the grid plan seems like a modern invention, it is actually thousands of years old.
From Mesopotamia to China to Mesoamerica, cities have been laid out on grids since the start of human civilisation.
Regulations or town plans are not new.
Just consider Ancient Rome, which took its grid-based urban planning and strict architectural style wherever it went, from Britain to Algeria to Jordan, and everywhere in between.
This might be “traditional” in some sense, but it isn’t really vernacular.
Something like Le Corbusier’s speculative Plan Voisin for Paris, or even the endless rows of cookie-cutter houses in suburbs, are a result of the same thinking behind Ancient Roman urban planning.
Vernacular, meanwhile, encourages variety and diversity — it’s more interesting.
Strict town plans and building regulations are useful and important — they help with things like transport or sanitation, and mitigate against risks like flooding or fire.
But, imposed too strictly, they mean it is now illegal to build something like France’s Mont Saint-Michel.
So vernacular architecture results in regionally and culturally specific styles of building. It’s why different countries and places… look different.
And it’s part of why we are so drawn to older places, and why tourists flock to every town with the slightest bit of history.
Because, unlike places with globally standardised architectural styles and overly strict town planning, the older, vernacular places speak to their history, region, and culture.
And, by virtue of being less planned, they are filled with personality, character, and charm.
Vernacular architecture also tends to be more human-scale as a direct result of how it was built.
Such places are therefore often more suited to social integration and to community, to healthier and happier lifestyles, and all the other benefits of human-scale design.
Not to mention that vernacular architecture is much more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Long before climate control, people figured out how to make buildings cool in summer and warm in winter — and they did it by using local materials, rather than importing them.
Insensitivity to local climate, ecological unsustainability, designed for cars rather than communities, badly scaled for human beings, bland and uniform aesthetics…
These are just some of the problems of modern urban design which the vernacular might help us solve.
Counterpunch needs to rein in the crazy, or at least find an editor that will actually edit for truth and veracity as opposed to the shout festival screed titled “The Time for Queer Revolution is Now” by Nicky Reid. How this ‘article’ got published is quite beyond me as it is rife with abject lies and hyperbole.
What the article and “Nicky” are though are prime examples of what passes for activism on the so called woke activist left. Notice there is never a positive solution offered only a ever growing grievance list that can only be satisfied by tearing down the society and norms that have given people like Nicky the opportunity to endlessly indulge in their specious narcissism in public.
This RPOJ (Red Pen of Justice) episode may run long as the bullshit runs deep and wide in almost every sentence.

Historical revisionism is one of the features of transgender ideology. Surprisingly(!) gender ideologues are fond of placing themselves at the centre of past events in order to gin up the baffle-gab narratives they use to hoodwink the public. Let’s get the actual history on the Stonewall riots –
“My research for this history demonstrates that if we wish to name the group most responsible for the success of the riots, it is the young, homeless homosexuals, and, contrary to the usual characterizations of those on the rebellion’s front lines, most were Caucasian; few were Latino; almost none were transvestites or transsexuals,” concludes David Carter in Stonewall, the definitive account of the uprising, for which he conducted hundreds of interviews. Carter quotes one of the bar’s owners stating that its clientele was “98 percent male.” As for the presence of transgender people, the Stonewall was “not a generally welcoming place for drag queens,” Eric Marcus, editor of an oral history of the gay rights movement, wrote in 1999. “The majority of the hundreds of people who crowded onto Christopher Street and jammed Sheridan Square were young gay men.” In his 1996 book American Gay, the sociologist and anthropologist Stephen O. Murray writes that “men familiar with the milieu then insist that the Stonewall clientele was middle-class white men and that very few drag queens or dykes or nonwhites were ever allowed admittance.”
Be very aware that someone who treats the historically record so maliciously will have no qualms about presenting lies and falsehoods about the present. This is one of the founding lies of transgender ideological narrative with the goals of painting themselves as the most oppressed group in the history of humankind. We’re only one sentence in folks…

I’m guessing this particular whinge is because parts of society (women who care about their rights, boundaries, and safety) have woken up to the bullshite that is being peddled by gender ideologues. Saying ‘no’ to the gender-cult is very distressing for them.

It is very important to establish how dangerous and oppressed you are (by your own metrics of course, we certainly cannot have empirical data muddying the waters. It is important to note that being transgender places you in one of the *safest* demographics in the US) .- especially in countries that, historically speaking, are the most free and most tolerant ones to exist. I’d like to see ‘Nicky’ spout this in China, or Cuba, or Iran. Then a few actual lessons about free speech and minority rights might be learned.

Umm. Reality is calling to you. Do you hear it? It’s the faint siren song of the truth trying desperately to breach your practiced ideological allergy to reality. A simple picture refutes yet another false transgender ideological construction (as does most of reality, to be honest).

I had to look up what ‘Nicky’ was talking about. I’m going to assume it was something to do with this clip.
Clearly, Michael Knowles is referring the ideology, and not the people. Accuracy in reporting, as Nicky keeps demonstrating, is clearly not their forte.

I am not particularly surprised that you can’t think of a more ‘appropriate description’ – because appropriate also usually entails the notion of comporting with reality. There is no trans genocide happening in the world outside of the unhinged ravings of transactivists hopped up on narcissism and fatuous ideology.
“For one, there is no clear intent to commit genocide against trans people, but additionally the trans comm unity is not of any particular nationality, ethnicity, race, or official religion (although one could argue that transgender ideology is a religion, it is not a recognized religious group). Confabulating again. Shocking.

Advocates of ‘gender affirming’ healthcare cite high suicide rates as evidence that medical and surgical intervention is “life-saving and medically necessary.” It goes without saying that every suicide is tragic, but there is no high-quality evidence to suggest that the often quoted overall attempted suicide rate of youth who identify as transgender is 41%. Dr. Laura Edwards-Leeper who is the Chair of the Child and Adolescent Committee for the World Professional Association for Transgender Health has stated, “As far as I know there are no studies that say that if we don’t start these kids immediately on hormones when they say they want them that they are going to commit suicide.. So that is misguided… in terms of needing to intervene medically to prevent suicide and doing it quickly. I know of no studies that have shown that.” There is also no evidence that medical transition decreases suicidality. In fact, one study showed that post transition adults were 4.9 times more likely to have made a suicide attempt and 19.1 times more likely to have died from suicide than the general population. No one is born in the wrong body. Our sex is written into the DNA of every cell of our body. People cannot change sex. It’s a serious thing to insinuate to someone that their healthy body is somehow wrong and might require extreme, irreversible cosmetic interventions to relieve mental distress. There is no right or wrong way to be a boy or a girl, a man or a woman.
I just want to pause here and draw attention to the two very different styles of writing going on. Nicky relies almost exclusively on personal narrative, raw emotions, and well…outright fabrications/delusions about how the world is. I (and other rational beings) present evidence and arguments based on said evidence for the reader to evaluate. ‘Nicky’ should try this ‘weird new methodology’ at some point in time.
“2023 is already the fourth consecutive record-breaking year for anti-trans bills in this country, with 498 hate laws in counting proposed in 49 states. 43 have already passed. This includes 12 states pushing laws that violate the rights of minors to seek what has been clinically proven to be lifesaving care, as well as three who have also expanded those bans to reach well into adulthood, banning the use of puberty blockers up to the age of 26.”
Nicky once again mischaracterizes legislation meant to protect children as ‘anti-trans’. We here at DWR like to classify this legislation as “pro-reality”. Children cannot consent to being sterilized, based on a self diagnosis of gender identity. It is a clown-school level of idiocy that certain medical ‘professionals’ have embraced the notion that young children can actively consent to make life affecting decisions.Justdad7 a Canadian Lawyer, characterizes and summarizes what is going on –
“The more controversial question is whether puberty blockers, which can be started as early as age 9, will result in sterility. Critics of medical transition have long argued that puberty suppression, which is almost invariably followed by cross sex hormones, will result in sterility. Gender clinicians generally reassure parents that puberty blockers will not necessarily result in sterility. They refer to research on cases of precocious puberty which have found that puberty will resume once the drugs have stopped. However, in treatment or precocious puberty the drugs are stopped at the beginning of the normal window for puberty. This is when they are started in gender affirming care. There is no reliable research on the effects of puberty blockers during the normal window for puberty on fertility. In private sessions, they do acknowledge that sterility is a serious risk.“
Yeah, so Nicky steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the other side of the story and hopes that his emotive language and hyperbole will win you over. (As opposed to facts and evidence.)
“This hideous campaign also includes a growing rash of so-called anti-drag bills the likes of which have already passed in Tennessee and Florida and are effectively written to police public gender non-conformity in a blatant violation of free speech and expression. In Nashville, a second attempt at “male or female impersonation” is a felony that could lead to over half a decade in prison. That is six years upstate for the crime of having a dick beneath your dress.”
The transgender piggy back is in play here and you will see many instances of this phenomena in Nicky’s essay. Trans ideology and transactivists will latch onto any other groups problems and use it to amplify their own concerns. Another favourite piggy-back target are individuals with chromosomal disorders or DSD’s or intersex people. They will regularly point to intersex people as some sort third sex which makes their specious argument that sex is spectrum “truthier”. While in reality, people with DSD’s do not constitute a third sex and almost all are unambiguously male or female. Anything to promote the transgender cause though, it really doesn’t matter how big the lie or who they have to toss under the bus. See the transgender denial of sex in action, and of course dismantled by fact in the video below.

They have made it painfully clear that they consider the entire transgender tribe to be little more than an ideology that they fully intend to censor out of existence by any means necessary and they are targeting our children first, using the public school system for its original intended purpose to kill the Queer and save the child so as to protect the sanctity of their idealized concept of purified cisgender youth.”
The blurring boundaries and destabilizing children is being fought against. The original purpose was of the public school system was/is to educate them. This is not the goal of DQSH and similar operations as pointed out byJames Lindsay on the New Discourses.
“It bears pointing out that so far we have heard that Drag Queen Story Hour exists to be generative for the following purposes: (1) to lead children to “livequeerly,” (2) to question sex and gender and their stability, (3) to break rules and want to break rules, (4) to see their usual teachers and school authority figures and potentially by extension their parents as boring by comparison to drag queens and “living queerly,” (5) to turn toward pleasure and desire, and (6) to let go of control, all in the presence of an adult man who thinks it is a good idea to dress and perform as a highly sexualized woman in the presence of children he hopes to influence. As we will see, we can add to this list (7) tempting them into “alternative modes of kinship” in the sense of the “queer ‘family’” one leaves their real family for and chooses “on the street.” (Calling this program “grooming,” it must be warned, will get you unceremoniously kicked off the largest social media platforms, by the way.)
At this point, it is legitimately a question as to why any adult would possibly consider Drag Queen Story Hour a good idea. “When talking to people about the state of universities in Canada, many deny the negative impact of “woke-ism.” My current “lived experience” in a province with a reputation for supporting free speech, however, indicates otherwise. For those unfamiliar with the word, “woke-ism” (spelled wokism in this publication) is the colloquial term for the postmodern tactic of reducing scientific objectivity to subjective authoritarianism, imposing its arbitrary interpretation of what is acceptable. Also referred to as “reified postmodernism” by Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay, the authors of the hilarious but revealing “grievance studies hoax,” this reactionary response to the intellectual progress driven by the Enlightenment tries to prevent certain ideas from being discussed under the auspices that the identities of oppressed groups must be “made real.”

Despite my costly collision with wokism at Mount Royal University in Calgary, I was still not prepared for what was to transpire at the University of Lethbridge earlier this month. I had been invited by philosophy professor Paul Viminitz to give a talk, to be entitled “How ‘Woke-ism’ Threatens Academic Freedom.” I was about to experience the fury of current wokism. UofL President Mike Mahon originally stated that the talk would be allowed to proceed because of the institution’s policy on freedom of expression. Woke faculty and students responded with intensifying pressure, leading Mahon to cancel my appearance a few days later.

I remained adamant that I should go to the university to challenge Mahon’s assault on academic values (and repudiation of his institution’s freedom of expression policy). So on February 1 I arrived at the university to give my talk in a “Speakers’ Corner” type of format. But as I walked out of the elevator of University Hall and into The Atrium – a large public space on campus – I was amazed to see a crowd of about 700 people filling the main floor and upper level. While some in the audience had come to hear me speak, and a number were just curious onlookers, many were openly hostile to my presence, some brandishing signs declaring “RACISM IS NOT FREE SPEECH.”

It was a watershed moment for me. Gender-magic suddenly, was made a part of our Charter of Rights and the resulting bullshit was quite beyond the pale as female rights, boundaries, and safety continue to be curtailed and rolled back up here in Canada. It is 2023 now, and push-back against the tide of regressive gender ideology has a reasonable start, but we still have a long way to go as most of our government institutions are thoroughly captured by this insidious ideology.
The silos present there at first confirmed my left bias, but then led by the likes of James Lindsay and his podcasts from The New Discourses I embarked on a journey to the right, or at least centre-right.
