Religion never taught men to respect my (or any woman’s or child’s) personal space and, in all frankness (just so conveniently, by design, echoing the men who invented religion): it could care less about us daring to actually not want to be the human species’ prostitutes. The worst part is: most religions would, probably, consider such a declaration (asserting REAL human dignity) heresy!

Precisely the reason why we need to keep the wall separating church and state strong and well fortified. We need to govern our society to the best of our ability on the basis of rationality and facts – which are in very short supply when it comes to religious dogma.
I’m sorry to hear about your terrible experience with religion growing up in that misogynistic hell-scape must have been extremely difficult. :(
