This is my experience, too. Equality is difficult for many to grasp if it involves unfairness. So the preference for equity seems reasonable. The problem is, life and the world IS unfair. And only our efforts can address it. Learning that lesson early better prepares people for real life than pretending we can fix or deny reality through the mandatory efforts of others.

Equality to me is more in the preparation than the outcomes . Basically the human needs we would want for all our children… home security, food security , education , health care, enrichment and exposure, basic resources as per interest. Secure them in perpetuity for every citizen , any circumstance, any age. Then let your artists be artists, inventors invent, and leave everyone up to their own devices.
The reason there are homeless and people on the streets is basically all the “hero” billionaires (2700) who basically took all the money . Add to them the 63.5 million millionaires. Combined have about 90% of everything.
Our current system with all its complicated analysis still is basically feeding All the oats to the top horses in the hopes that enough kernels will pass though to feed the starving chickens. Not. Working. Well.
We might have to get over the “contribute and produce” part. We used to call it the Protestant Work ethic. All Work all the time. There is a lot to be said for just leaving things alone and looking at them . Our improvements, developments and clever use have brought the concept of the 6th great extinction to our doorstep.
So you should get to be who you are but you don’t get to be everyone else.

There is a balance to be struck. I want people not to starve and freeze. We should do what we can to make sure everyone has their basic needs met.
We also need to have the best people in society rise. When they do well, we often benefit as well.
Should we do more to tax the ultra rich? Maybe? I’d like to see the tax system overhauled so that people (rich, poor, and everything in between) can’t game the system in their favour.
No tax system will be perfect, but I think we can do more to address the current system’s oversights.

Humans hate change and bad news. Coming to terms with the equality/equity situation is involves both of the aforementioned qualities.
I agree with you, the more accurate picture of reality a person has, usually the better they can cope with the inevitable and unvarnished conclusions life has to offer.

The money accrued to the rich thu no effort , wind fall by possession assets within a country, or by profiting off others misfortune or the spoils of war or even a flat tax on earnigs would help.
Right now a law limiting housing possession to one house which has to be your primary residence and you have to live there 6 months a year and a second as recreation or work related only would improve a lot of things.
I have heard there are enough vacant houses in California to house every homeless person in California.
Canada with its’ international reputation as an excellent place to launder money especially in housing surely suffers in the same way.

I’m all for curbing the excesses and people cheating the system. We need a reward structure in place that gives people people incentive to contribute to society and make their lives better. The more we cut down on cheating and grift, the better the system will be.

The answer has always been simply talking the rich out of their need for all their money or as the saying goes “To (have them) know when enough is enough is enough”. I saw a reporter at a pro immigration rally ask random people if they would be willing to take one home …..to a person “No. sorry No room.” As ever empathy and sympathy are a rare and seemingly worthless vector in economic considerations.
Who will love a little Sparrow?
Who’s traveled far and cries for rest?
“Not I,” said the Oak Tree
“I won’t share my branches with no sparrow’s nest
And my blanket of leaves won’t warm her cold breast.”
Who will love a little Sparrow
And who will speak a kindly word?
“Not I,” said the Swan
“The entire idea is utterly absurd
I’d be laughed at and scorned if the other Swans heard.”
And who will take pity in his heart
And who will feed a starving sparrow?
“Not I,” said the Golden Wheat
“I would if I could but I cannot, I know
I need all my grain to prosper and grow.”
Who will love a little Sparrow?
Will no one write her eulogy?
“I will,” said the Earth
“For all I’ve created returns unto me
From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be.”
