Religious stupidity it burns! Potholer54 goes into the dark seedy world of Creation “Science” to find the most vacuously dishonest christian on Youtube. It was a tight race, but one familiar name came out on top…
He’s a Fundie, with a BADGE! That’s right folks, newly appointed Winnipeg police chief Devon Clunis is gonna clean up the streets….with prayer! Hallelujah Sweet Jebus, we gonna fill some murderous hearts with love tonight, just by whispering sweet nothings into the ear of our collective imaginary friend, AMEN!
You know, I spend a good deal of my time reading about how religion poisons and destroys lives all across the globe, all across history, but I admit I’ve always felt a little shielded here in Canada. Sure, Alberta sometimes seems like the ‘Texas of Canada’, but that ‘of Canada’ bit reigns in a substantial amount of theistic lunacy.
Sure, we have some obstacles to overcome to become a truly progressive society, but this is Canada, goddamit! We got that separation of church and state thing going strong! We aren’t like those backward United States! Faith isn’t paraded like a virtue by those in public office! Civil servants keep their faiths hidden where they belong and … and … who the fuck is this guy? A police chief promoting prayer? Really? REALLY? IN MY COUNTRY?
Ok, ok. Calm down. Let’s deal with this like cool collected intellectual people, and tear this guy a new one.
Rationally speaking, of course. Read the rest of this entry »
I had it all wrong, Creationism actually should be in the classroom and everywhere else. But do not believe me, listen as Mr.Deity lays it all out for you.
One person’s story about breaking free from religious delusion and embracing their humanity.
If she can do it, so can you.
Here in the West and in the East we have our religious nutters. What is not being covered as much in the media here is the moderate response to the “film” the Innocence of Muslims. Avaaz.org has a great article which I’ve taken bits out of and posted for your reading pleasure.
Seven things you may have missed in the ‘Rage’:
Like everyone else, many Muslims find the 13 minute Islamophobic video “Innocence of Muslims” trashy and offensive. Protests have spread quickly, tapping into understandable and lasting grievances about neo-colonialist US and western foreign policy in the Middle East, as well as religious sensitivities about depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. But the news coverage often obscures some important points:
1. Early estimates put participation in anti-film protests at between 0.001 and 0.007% of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims – a tiny fraction of those who marched for democracy in the Arab spring.
2. The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful. The breaches of foreign embassies were almost all organised or fuelled by elements of the Salafist movement, a radical Islamist group that is most concerned with undermining more popular moderate Islamist groups.
3. Top Libyan and US officials are divided over whether the killing of the US ambassador to Libya was likely pre-planned to coincide with 9/11, and therefore not connected to the film.
4. Apart from attacks by radical militant groups in Libya and Afghanistan, a survey of news reports on 20 September suggested that actual protesters had killed a total of zero people. The deaths cited by media were largely protesters killed by police.
5. Pretty much every major leader, Muslim and western, has condemned the film, and pretty much every leader, Muslim and western, has condemned any violence that might be committed in response.
6. The pope visited Lebanon at the height of the tension, and Hezbollah leaders attended his sermon, refrained from protesting the film until he left, and called for religious tolerance. Yes, this happened.
7. After the attack in Benghazi, ordinary people turned out on the streets in Benghazi and Tripoli with signs, many of them in English, apologising and saying the violence did not represent them or their religion.
Add to that the number of really big news stories that were buried last week to make room for front page, angry Muslim “Clash” coverage. In Russia tens of thousands of protesters marched through Moscow to oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hundreds of thousands of Portuguese and Spaniards turned out for anti-austerity protests; and more than a million Catalans marched for independence.
Mystro introduced me to the youtuber WildWoodClair1. She has a nice channel with many videos mocking christian inanity in the multitudinous forms it comes in. Our selection today is a particularly concise take down of bad christian religious ideas stated with risibly solemn rectitude by clueless christians. Enjoy. :)
For a concise rundown of all the religious based stupidity going on in the Middle East please follow this link to the CBC where they have set up an interactive time line of all the idiocy that has, and continues to unfold, over a really bad film.
People are going nut-butter crazy over this. This?
I had to skip through it, and I like bad movies.
“Arbourist,” they ask me, “Why oh why do you attack religion so much?” Do I really need to answer that (again) now? Being the pedant that I am, of course I will answer that.
Religion is the methodology/mind set that allows nominally rational people to believe in and thus partake in pants-on-head stupid things.
Let’s sit back and let that soak in.
Good.
Is adhering to a secular rational mindset the cure-all for problems of religion. No, but it would be a great start. Allow me to illustrate:
Person #1: OMG did you see that American Film it makes fun of our religion and Mohammad!!
Person #2: Our godhead cannot be bismirched with such bally-ho, the unbelievers shall pay for this, lets burn their shit down.
~or~
Person #1:OMG did you see that American Film it makes fun of our religion and Mohammad!!
Person#2: A collection of bronze age mythology cannon by definition be offended by anything, much less by a risible film made by rejects from the Soylent Green factory.
Person#1: But the offence, the Blasphemy!!
Person#2: Err…if this god existed and was all powerful, this film would not exist. If nothing is being done by said godhead, then it must be okay by her. Oh and BTW, usually when you hear calls of blasphemy it corresponds to really crumby ideas being called out for being crummy ideas – this is a good thing and society will advance when we put outdated and useless beliefs behind us.
Person#1: Oh…well maybe I should write a letter to the editor or blog article then defending why I’m so offended….
Person#2: You could, but then you could be held up for ridicule because you’re attempting to get bent out of shape over perceived slights to your imaginary friend.
Person#1: I never thought of it like that, maybe I’ll just focus on reality and try and make my small part of the world a better place for everyone by caring for and respecting others.
*victory for freethought and rationality – humanity thrives forever et cetera*
