I’m not sure if the CBC has done us a favour by curating the recent spate of musical ‘viral’ videos, although I’m not sure how I missed Darth Vader vs. Hitler from the epic rap battle category…

Anyhow, viva la musica!

I have the music for the Trolololo song.   We’ll see if I can work it up into performing shape.

safebabyWe have a newspaper of record of sorts here in Alberta.  I’ll be quoting from the Edmonton Journal to cover the amazing amount of stupid it takes to somehow think that vaccines are linked to autism.

1.  They are not. [Pubmed, Google Scholar.]

2.  See #1.

“One in five Albertans believes some vaccines can cause autism, according to a new poll that suggests a big segment of the population is wary about a perceived medical side-effect that has been widely debunked by scientists.

The telephone poll of 2,838 respondents found that 21 per cent completely or somewhat agreed that some vaccines can cause autism, compared with 61 per cent who rejected this view.”

Do these people read?  Admittedly, not many people I know browse pubmed looking for the latest and greatest in papers dealing with vaccination, but when it is important as keeping the population safe from easily communicable diseases some use of the critical faculties is in order.

“The results mirror what Mainstreet found in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In each province, more than 20 per cent of respondents said they believe there is a correlation between vaccines and autism, a neurological disorder, said Quito Maggi, president of the polling firm.

A study published in the late 1990s suggested the measles vaccine was linked to autism, but the author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, was found to have falsified data to advance his claims.

Wakefield lost his medical licence and the British journal that published the study, the Lancet, retracted it.”

So, there is no basis for this link.  Yet shitty people are taking advantage of the credulous and the credulous being well…credulous continue not to vaccinate their children.

“The skepticism borne out of the study has been kept alive by countless websites making claims and by celebrities like Jenny McCarthy, who claims vaccines can cause autism in children.

“The issue is, that fear has been instilled in parents,” said Shannon MacDonald, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Calgary’s faculty of medicine who studies vaccine uptake and parental acceptance. “If you understand the background of it, that a study of 12 children with fraudulent data has been counteracted by multiple studies with 14 million children, that sounds obvious.

“But that’s not the message that people hear.”

When did people dispense with critical thought.  For sure you can be “open-minded” but without a filter critical analysis your skull fills up with teh stoopid faster than you can say “Jenny McCarthy”.

” Fifty-three per cent of respondents said schools should refuse unvaccinated children, compared to 36 per cent who held an opposing view.

When the question turned to child-care facilities, the results were similar. Fiftyeight per cent said unvaccinated children shouldn’t be allowed, with 31 per cent disagreeing.

A majority of those polled – 56 per cent – said parents should be able to decide against vaccinating their children, but 34 per cent said this shouldn’t be the case.

Despite some skepticism identified in the Mainstreet poll, most respondents – 61 per cent – agreed that a drop in vaccinations of children would have serious health impacts. Sixteen per cent disagreed, while the rest were undecided.”

Well the majority of people polled are not skull-shatteringly stupid.  But there is enough stupid out there to hurt people.  Child vaccination should be mandatory if you child is to attend public institutions.   End of story.

OR… you form a fake religion so you can opt out with the religious exemption!!!!  *facepalm forever*

Sadly, this is a real thing.  Thanks again religion for going to bat for people who believe in made up shit.  :(

Physics! Science! Facts!  – Entertainment that edifies. :)

Let’s just add this to the list of things to be mindful of when dealing with the important and not so important people in our lives.  How often does it happen to you?  Does it happen to you?

In hindsight, I can see that sometimes I do this and really, as the video says, it just isn’t very helpful.

Eleven new horses have come into care at Rescue 100.  Their pictures are up on their facebook page, but not on the website yet.  There are two stallions, seven mares, and two foals.  Of course, they were all running together; a couple of the mares look really pregnant and probably they all of them are.  These horses are in comparatively not-too-bad condition – they all need their hooves done, and you can see a bit of boniness even through some of their thick winter coats, but compared to some of the animals who have come through just about on death’s door from starvation, these are healthy.  The mares without foals are ready for placement immediately; the stallions will be available as soon as they have been gelded, and the foals will be available once they’re weaned.

Here is on of the mare/foal pairs; I’ll show you more pony pictures in the upcoming weeks.

ColtFrecklesSmall

The colt has one blue eye, which you can kindof see in this picture. So shaggy!

And look at his mama’s adorable freckled face!

FreckleFace

GW knocks it out of the park with this article. Gender is an oppressive hierarchy that is toxic to women, and that is where we need to keep the focus.

cageThe BBC gives a little more background –

” Islamic State has become synonymous with viciousness – beheadings, crucifixions, stonings, massacres, burying victims alive and religious and ethnic cleansing.

While such savagery might seem senseless to the vast majority of civilised human beings, for IS it is a rational choice. It is a conscious decision to terrorise enemies and impress and co-opt new recruits.”

How does one deal with the grotesquery and horror that is going on in Syria/Iraq?  The ISIL show executions are delivered to social media with frightful regularity.  Mass executions, beheadings, and now people being burnt alive – where does this end?

This sort of behaviour is a lose/lose scenario for everyone involved.  The banality of such cruelty will not go unpunished, but in doing so the seeds for the next ISIL will be sown.

Can we be satisfied with calling this cruel face of religious extremism therefore justifying dealing with ISIL with extreme prejudice?  I mean, why the hell not?  How can we *not* rally against people who burn people alive and stone people, and behead people, and…

The ISIL problem is just too damn big.

Focusing just one one aspect of the ISIL be it the religious, or the political or the economics of the situation just isn’t enough.   Yet tackling all aspects of those questions is a dissertation level job at least and that simply won’t do either.   I went for a walk on this one and came back with this:

We, in the world, need a powerful international body to settle disputes and mitigate the internecine conflicts that crop up the world over.  The irrelevance the United Nations of today is a major factor that contributes to the hepped-up, uni-polar gunboat diplomacy that has become the new normal in this age of American Exceptionalism.

Rules are just words on a page if the most powerful nation on earth refuses to follow them.  The International Court of Justice, the UN, hell even the Geneva Conventions are supposed to be venerated and respected world institutions that would allow nations to mediate their disputes before they have to shed innocent blood to resolve their disputes.  The fact that they are not respected by the US essentially neuters these institutions/ideas and sets the stage for the slow-brew of anarchy we are currently experiencing.

We’re doing the unilateral thing for awhile now, and we should reflect to see what it has brought us.  Security? Peace? Justice?  I’d have to say no on all three counts.

We do not have security we have a security state – a state of affairs (in Canada at least) that borders on making certain thoughts illegal and therefore punishable by law.  The US is much farther down the Orwellian rabbit hole with the unaccountable NSA and Homeland Security merrily shredding the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

We do not have peace, we have, and will continue to have, a series of escalating conflicts over the remainder of the world’s resources whether it be oil, water or living space.  People with big sticks will make the rules in their favour, this will make the majority that are disenfranchised rebel against the system – the bullies will clamp down with terror and death – the disenfranchised will die, and their resolve will double and rebellion will continue – repression will increase…   We have no peace, we have a hegemonic cycle that provides a cheap gilded imitation of peace, but in reality is just a mask for imperial ambitions and avarice.

Justice?  Justice across the world right now is a labyrinthine maze of deciept.  The nations that have had strong traditions of law and justice are being corrupted by powerful interests that see Law as unjust impediment on the act of making money.  Nations that should be setting the gold standard for legal accountability and ethical practice instead wallow in the ruins of a once tenable system.  The robber-barons, the arch capitalists – they set the rules now, warping justice to fit their perverted aspirations to the detriment of the common people.   We have the glitzy version of justice, just enough to hide the venal rot it is composed of.

This unipolar hell that is our legacy at the moment needs to be dismantled, because the only thing that replaces empire – is another empire.  Let me assure you that we do not want to be on the business end of another empires stick.  We might see the benefit of a strong international body when we no longer have the capacity to project power and our future is in the hands of others.
