It’s not just religion. The working class are always suckers. Remember Trump’s “I could stand in the middle of 5th ave and shoot somebody…” remark? It’s certainly not the educated or affluent he’s referencing there.
At this rate, soon they will no longer have to be deceptive about the ass-fuckery they’ve been dishing out. Just go full Ayn Rand and preach exploitation and greed as a virtue.
Not that any of this will change. Chomsky knows himself it’s a waste of time. In the history of the world, I don’t know if there’s ever been a group more sold out against their own interests – who worked so feverishly against themselves – as white working class people over the last two centuries. And if it’s not enough that they work against their own interests, they actually cherish and defend the history of such. How long will these people allow themselves to be wielded against their fellow have-nots?
Wanna dupe poor WASPs into doing your dirty work? Just make it about religion, culture, race, heritage and/or patriotism, etc. … they’ll see it as their cherished duty to send their sons off to die – or their cherished duty to hate. Just offer them the scraps that fall from your table and they’ll sell out their fellow workers, no problem.
And I live in rural Ohio, so believe me, it’s a living, breathing reality for me. And believe me when I say it’s going to get worse before it gets better. As the demographics shift, a movement will rise up demanding justice, and that’s when the .1% will make their final, desperate, violently reactionary appeal to the white working class in a bid to maintain the status-quo – to preserve their spoils – and even if it means imposing dictatorship. And if you doubt what I say, just wait and see.
