Could not others “find” us as we “find” exoplanets, looking for planets that possess a large amount of oxygen, a sign of life?

Here’s how I approached this in a little dabble of writing:
“We travel up and down the Spur and we turn over a thousand rocks, and all we find are a thousand forms of simple dumb life,” the whisperer’s whispered. “But it’s not that there isn’t anyone else out here. There are. They’re everywhere. They rose, they looked around, and they said ‘Oh no, no, no, no!’
In, they decided, was better than out. We’re looking at everything backwards,” the whisperers would insist. “It’s katabasis, not anabasis that explains the silence.”
Bookbinder had heard the stories. Aliens were not travelling between the stars, forging vast galactic empires. They were instead tucked away inside custom-built fantasy worlds. Eternal, unending, self-repairing, forgiving. Entire universes where every adventure and every pleasure imaginable (or pain, if that was your thing) could be lived.
And why not? Barraging through the incomprehensibly vast vacuum of space in corroding metal cans wrapped around a bubble of atmosphere and irritable fusion fires was borderline insanity, and the chances of timing your blind run to coincide with some other civilisation who’d evolved just enough to make for interesting dinner guests, but not far enough to be some archaeological curiosity, was seventeen shades of zero.
The solution: Build heaven, spice to taste, upload yourself, and disappear.

It is possible for sure. I think the hope is that they do not discover us because if they have the tech to get here, they would have the power to colonize/destroy us at their whim.

Nice JZ – the selection has a very ‘Neuromancer’ feel. Artificial consciousness constructs I think, will come to late for the likes of you and I though. :(
