Imagine being told you are not old enough or have reproduced enough yet to have a life saving procedure. Aaaaand then watching your husband ask for the very same thing and boom *it just gets done*. 2019 folks and this shit is still the standard.

Inspired by a recent conversation with a antediluvian blogger.

A little push-back at the more toxic prescriptions of our society.

Need fetus porn and bullshit arguments? Look up your local, if you’re unlucky, pro-life chapter.  This video illustrates the basic lie that hovers below the surface of much of pro-life land.  Being pro-life is *not* about preserving life it is about removing choice from women, thus in reality anti-choice is a much more appropriate moniker for this particular subset of deluded people.

An estimated 40 million abortions will take place in the developing world in 2012. Most of these procedures will be clandestine and unsafe, taking a terrible toll on women’s lives. Reducing the number of unsafe abortions is essential for improving public health. And it’s the basic right of every woman to decide whether and when to have a child—without having to put her health or life at risk.

This is a snippet from the Raw Story. Go there and read the full article about how the republican party of the US want to happily join impoverished nations in destroying female autonomy.  The fetus-fetish crew never seem to key on the fact that women are alive and are actually fully human being with the full status we accord to autonomous individuals.  Facts I guess, get in the way of screaming “what about the baaaaaaaaabeeeeeeee!!1!!!”, till either they or their opponents are rendered unconscious.

“A study published in The Lancet last January shows that the countries with the most stringent restrictions on abortion also have the highest rates of unsafe abortion.

The rate of unsafe abortion in Africa was 28 per 1,000 women of childbearing age and 31 per 1,000 in Latin America, regions where abortion is highly restricted in almost all countries, according to the study led by Gilda Sedgh at the Guttmacher Institute in New York, using the most recent data gathered in 2008. That compares with less than 0.5 per 1,000 in western Europe and North America.

Unsafe abortions result in 200 deaths for every 100,000 abortions performed globally, or 350 times the current rate in the United States, according to the study. Legalizing abortion in South Africa (1997) and Nepal (2002), resulted in a 91 percent reduction in abortion-related deaths in the former country and a 50 percent decline in the rate of abortion-related complications seen in hospitals in the latter.”

Sometimes there is a absence of reasonable discussion when it comes to the topic of abortion.  The lack of solid empirical grounding for arguments leads to some rather wild and wooly debates.  The Guttmacher institute has a new section called “Are you in the Know?” about women’s health and abortion.

Safer than childbirth, funny you never hear the anti-choice loons mention this fun little fact.

The scare tactics anti-choicer nutters usually resort to include the specious post abortion syndrome and other such nonsense.  Cherry picking facts is nothing new for the fetus fetish crowd as their crusade against women has little time for intellectual honesty.
