Wow, Ms.Burchill just doesn’t have time for the bullshite that woke-intersectionalists have turned into a squalid art from here in 2019.  Five years ago she was calling bullshite on the current empire of cud (‘intersectional’ queer theory) that is currently bolllocking up effective feminist action.

 

From a 2014 article titled Don’t You Dare Tell me to Check my Privilege

“Suzanne’s crime, it transpired, was to be ‘cis-gendered’ as opposed to transgendered (that is, she was born female) and not to have ‘checked her privilege’ — what passes for a battle cry in certain ever-decreasing circles these dog days. It’s hardly ‘No pasarán!’ — rather, it declares an intention that it is better to be nagged to death on one’s knees rather than stand by one’s principles on one’s feet. Consider how lucky you are, born women, before you raise your voice above that of a trans-sister! — that veritable cornucopian horn of plenty which we lucky breed fortunate enough to be born to a sensory smorgasbord of periods, PMT, the menopause, HRT and being bothered ceaselessly for sex by random male strangers since puberty take such flagrant delight in revelling in, shameless hussies that we are. Add to this that Suzanne was, like myself, born into the English working class, and therefore marginally less likely to have beaten the odds than a dancing dog or busker’s cat to have become a public figure, and I was buggered (not being homophobic, there) if I was going to put up with a bunch of middle-class seat-sniffers, educated beyond all instinct and honesty, laying into my girl.

But it wasn’t just that. It was an instinctive desire to defend the socialism of my dead father. Because intersectionality is actually the opposite of socialism! Intersectionality believes that there is ‘no such thing as society’ — just various special interests.

In my opinion, we only become truly brave, truly above self-interest, when fighting for people different from ourselves. My hero as a kid was Jack Ashley — a deaf MP who became the champion of rape victims. These days, the likes of those who went after Suzanne would probably dismiss him as a self-loathing cis-ableist. Intersectionality, like identity politics before it, is pure narcissism.

Though it reminds us ceaselessly to ‘check our privilege’, intersectionality is the silliest privilege of them all, a gang of tools and twats tiptoeing around others’ finer feelings rather than getting stuck in, mucking in, like proper mates — the ultimate privilege, which is to serve each other with collective love and action. The most recently inter-species ruckus happened when the Deirdre Spart impersonator Laurie Penny wrote a passionate defence of the pixie cut in the New Statesman, only to get it in the sleekly shaved neck from women who accused her of not taking the different behaviour of African hair into consideration. When I asked a supporter of this lunacy whether she thought that every subject of interest to women should have every type of woman weighing in with her written opinion, she answered that yes, she did. Seriously? I don’t think my heart can stand the excitement of a weekly Staggers the size of a telephone directory.

I personally can understand black women occasionally getting teed off with their apparently carefree Wash’n’Go white stepsisters. But the most recent and reactionary development within this hissy-fitting hothouse — the insistence of intersectional feminists on the right of transsexuals not to be offended — tells you all you need to know about the essential stupidity of the movement.

The idea that a person can chose their gender — in a world where millions of people, especially ‘cis-gendered’ women, are not free to choose who they marry, what they eat or whether or not their genitals are cut off and sewn up with barbed wire when they are still babies — and have their major beautification operations paid for by the National Health Service seems the ultimate privilege, so don’t tell me to check mine. Here’s hoping that the in-fighting in-crowd of intersectionality disappear up their own intersection really soon, so the rest of us can resume creating a tolerant and united socialism.”

My view is that gender is no more real than Victorian ectoplasm, or creationism.
It’s nothing more than an idea that some people hold, one that they are determined to press onto others.

And I think people don’t often enough understand that it exists to GROUP PEOPLE into CATEGORIES based on shared traits.
It’s right there in the root of the word.

Gender = group with shared traits

But people who push the concept of gender now try to make it be two opposing things at once, like a shoe they claim can fit on both feet at the same time.

If you ask them directly what it means, this is what you are told.

First they say gender is an individual, indefinable, intimately personal and subjective thing. It’s different for everybody, no-one is the same. My personal, bespoke, made to measure shoe.

And then, barely drawing breath, they tell me that it encircles an entire group and excludes another; a very distinct class, a group. One that must be recognised by its single communal name.

And when you ask, if it is unique and personal to you, then why am I in this class with you? What are our shared traits that make us a class, yet exclude those others? What is it you think you see in ME that is making you pull me into this idea you have of YOU?

They answer, we cannot tell you these traits we share, but you must stay in this class with us. And we must share the same name. Or, if you are one of the very, very few, you can leave and join that class over there. But we cannot tell you what their shared traits are too. You must decide, you are us or you are them, but there are no criteria we can tell you so that you know which is which. You will feel it inside you.

And this makes no sense. And you sense there is a lie here, a truth being hidden.

And you begin to notice that when they are unguarded, they let things slip. I knew from a child that I was a ….because I liked…..I always wanted to be a …..because I felt….because I wanted…

And the picture of what they really think the shared traits of these groups are begins to take shape, and you understand why most genderbelievers don’t want to answer directly. The things they liked, and felt, and wanted are all stereotypes. Expectations and rules and behaviours and fashions and feelings. And all of them attached, needlessly, to a very, very distinct group that really does have tangible shared traits. Attached to a biological SEX. And the word the genderbelievers are using to describe their gender; these wants and likes and rules and feelings, is also the word used for sex.

So you say, oh wow, I get it, I understand what you want, and you can have it! In fact, it’s ALL yours, all that stuff, I never really wanted it. Take the gender stuff, and like a metaphorical 6 inch heel, hot pink, patent leather spike stiletto, go ahead and put it on your own foot, I’ll be much more comfortable without it, in fact. Take the stuff, but please just detach it from my sex. Have it, but please, leave me the word for my sex, for my body, so we don’t confuse the two things, SEX and GENDER, any more. The shoe is all yours, not mine and good luck to you.

And they say, No way.

They need my foot too. It has to be squashed into that shoe alongside their own foot. My sex, my body, the thing I cannot change, squashed uncomfortably into that gender shoe, with their sex, their body, and both of us under the same name. The name that used to mean my sex. And we won’t talk about our sexes or our bodies any more, we’ll just talk about the single shoe that both our feet are crammed into.

So that’s gender, and that’s why I hate it, and all the lies and obfuscation around it. It’s a stupid, uncomfortable shoe that everyone would do better to throw in the bin, but which has instead become the thing that I am forced to wear if I am to have words to talk about my sex. It has become the thing I always hated that I am ordered to share with people with whom I have nothing in common. It hurts, I want my foot out of it, I can run better without it.

I want to be barefoot. The way I was born.

Women’s Day has come around again.  Let’s focus on the material conditions that inhibit the flourishing of women.  A huge thank you to those women who have stepped up and are being seen in society thus providing the path for others to follow.  Concomitantly, thanks to those who have chosen to take paths the patriarchy denies light to, but are vitally contributing to the well being of society and future generations.

I am a big fan of raunchel’s musings.  Her writing is adroit, prescient, and incisive.  A small sample highlights teh awesome:

“Because if there is one thing that a woman isn’t allowed to be in our society, it’s different. We aren’t allowed to be individuals, we only are part of a group. And we need this group, we have to be with others, to have a measure of safety. Alone, we’re vulnerable. Of course, in a group, with others, we’re still vulnerable, but less so. This means that it is vital to be part of a group. And to be part of a group, we have to be like the others.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where there are many pressures on women. All of society has expectations for us, and every deviation thereof means that we have to be punished. This punishment often is exclusion. We are expected to be silent, to be meek, to be a thousand things. But none of those things are being strong, being ambitious, or just being yourself.

This is why women often refuse to take the centre stage. Not only have we been taught since they were little girls that they should be silent, but they also know that if they do, they are excluded. They basically become un-persons, and even associating with them brings the same social punishment.

The reason why this is so strongly enforced is very simple. Nothing is as undermining to patriarchy as a woman who actually achieves something.”

I’m so very lucky to have such a sharp feminist commentariate here at DWR (thanks for leaving this comment, Meg).  Along with the informative nuanced discussion, gems like this crop up and are too good not be shared.  Can I get a ‘society doesn’t give two shits about your special gender feels’ for $200, Alex?

Let’s get this straight.  This isn’t about hating on or disparaging individual trans people, it never has been.  My contention, since I was first exposed to trans ideology and transactivsm (aka MRA activism) has been this – other people’s subjective beliefs do not/should not dictate my reality.   I’ve been an atheist, since forever, and brook no shit when it comes to religious claims about religious interpretations of  reality and how society should be.  If you keep your theological mumbo-jumbo and bullshit practices to yourself and don’t impose them on others then things are great – you have ALL of my blessings to freely waste your own life as you see fit. If praying to invisible sky-fairies and following the ‘bestest’ 2000 year old wisdom from the high moral vanguard of the sheep-herding class is your ‘jam’…

Knock yourself out.

The instant you think that I should get behind your bronze age fuckwagon of stupid ideas – then we have a problem.   Your sincere religious beliefs and identity have exactly fuck-all to do with material factual reality and thus precisely zero to do with how I should view the world.

The claims of transactivists – that feelings transcend observable reality (generally speaking) – are in the exact same category of the religious who believe in omnipotent skyfairies.  If you think you can change your biological sex by adopting the patriarchal toxic gender stereotypes that are currently (have been for thousands of years) oppressing women in our society then again, my answer is easy.

Knock yourself out.

The instant you think I (or any feminist worth their salt) should give any weight to your subjectively personal gender fuckwagon of stupid contradictory ideas – then we have a problem.

There is nothing wrong in disagreeing with ideas and ideology that are at odds with reality.  If your ideology doesn’t hold up under criticism, then the problem is with your ideology, not the people pointing out the (obvious) flaws in it.

The quote that follows illustrates precisely the reality transactivists refuse to acknowledge.  The treatment they receive in society is but a pale shade of the fucking standard plate of shit that females get in society.  If they were actually women they would be told (and socialized from birth) to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up – like women (adult human females) are every day.

They can say they believe “transwomen are women” but they don’t treat transwomen as actual women. Don’t you see? If transwomen were actually women, then the problems of transwomen would be treated with the same hum-drum response as any other woman’s issue. It wouldn’t be forced in everyone’s face, demanding the highest visibility and everyone’s immediate attention. No, that’s how men’s issues are treated. That’s how disadvantaged men are treated. That’s how men are prioritized over women, each and every time.

So sure, you can sit around and argue with them until you’re both blue in the face, but remember who you’re arguing with. You’re not arguing with people who actually believe their own assertions. You’re arguing with people who are baffling you with bullshit, even if they aren’t consciously aware that’s what they’re doing.”

 

Need more evidence?  Take a peek at the state of female reproductive rights in your corner of the world and observe carefully how short a shrift is given to actual female problems.

“I am about to be interviewed about the oppressive nature of gender by a male reporter who called me a “cis woman.” Here is my (slightly edited) written response to him before agreeing to the interview:

“When I see the unquestioning use of the word “cis” I assume I am dealing with someone who adheres to gender ideology. This word is degrading and designed to enforce the idea that sex-role stereotypes are innate. “Cis woman” implies a woman who naturally performs femininity, the set of ritualized submission gestures taught to female-sexed people from birth. You do not seem to understand that there is a difference between sex and gender or that the millenia old system of patriarchy oppresses female sexed people because of our reproductive capacity. When male authority figures like Rick Santorum (who supports transgenderism btw) get on the airways every election cycle and announce that women should be forced by the state to birth rapists’ babies, these men are not participating in gender oppression; they are oppressing women on the basis of sex. Transwomen have never worried about being forced to give birth, going to jail for a suspicious miscarriage, or giving birth at home in a state where that act is illegal. Transwomen’s bodies are not and have never been church and state regulated breeding units. I fight for the class of people oppressed on the basis of biological sex. I call these people female, girls, and women.

If transwomen would like to join this fight in a way that does not eliminate this group of people from having concise words for ourselves and the ability to name what is happening to us (sex-based oppression; males oppressing females), I welcome that help. Instead, many transwomen are upset that female people are not using our resources and energy to fight for the rights of males who declare themselves female. Your questions imply that those of us who fight against global sex-based oppression are doing wrong by the people who say there is no such thing as sex, that female is just a feeling that a person with a penis can have, and the most important women are the women who are actually men.

Are you asking gender activists questions about how it may be harmful to the class of people who are oppressed on the basis of sex to no longer have a word for ourselves? Are you asking transwomen how girls and women (who live under a constant threat of rape by people with penises) might feel about being forced to have people with penises in our locker rooms, changing rooms, DV shelters, jail cells, etc? Are you asking why men like Rick Santorum and the religious authorities of Iran support transgenderism? Why will the government of Iran kill someone for being gay but happily pay for “sex-change” surgery? Could it be because being gay actually challenges the sexist behavioral caste system called gender while being transgender does not? And on the subject of Iran, are you asking how the women of Iran feel now that half of their national women’s soccer team consists of biological males?

As a female person, I am very aware of what would have been my fate had I been born elsewhere in the world. I agonize every day over what my sisters are enduring globally. No transwoman would have been at risk of being aborted in the womb when a vulva showed up on an ultrasound or being smothered to death for not having a penis or being fed less than bepenised siblings. Transwomen would not have been at risk of being sold to an old man as a rape and breeding slave while the world called it “child marriage.” Transwomen would not have been abducted from school by Boko Haram, raped and impregnated then shunned by the whole village upon returning from that hell. Transwomen would not have been denied education provided only to male children. Transwomen would not be the ward of male relatives, unable to leave the house without being covered head to toe and accompanied by a male over the age of 13. If transwomen would like to join the fight against these and other sex-based atrocities, I would welcome that. Instead, trans activists are more interested in forcing women to adhere to the linguistic demands of males who assert they are female and forcing women to pretend to agree that penises can be female organs.

I support all trans people in their right to perform gender and to believe whatever they believe about themselves and the world. I believe trans people should have freedom of expression and be free of discrimination in housing, healthcare, and employment. I condemn physical violence against trans people. I do not believe transwomen have a right to insist that I capitulate to gender ideology or to compel me to use words I do not believe are true.

Radical feminsm is the global movement to end sex-based oppression. We cannot end sex-based oppression without ending gender. Females are not oppressed because of their gender. Gender itself oppresses females.”
