Finally.

A Houston grand jury investigating undercover footage of Planned Parenthood found no wrongdoing Monday by the abortion provider, and instead indicted anti-abortion activists involved in making the videos that targeted the handling of fetal tissue in clinics and provoked outrage among Republican leaders nationwide.

Yeah, dudes rallying to deny women their rights. Shocking, I know.

Yeah.   Dudes rallying to deny women their rights. Shocking, I know.

This is what happens when your platform is based on lies, deception and intimidation of women and those who support them.  You get your shit called out in court, one of the few places in America where evidence and facts still matter.

Planned Parenthood vindicated:

“This is absolutely great news because it is a demonstration of what Planned Parenthood has said from the very beginning: We follow every law and regulation and these anti-abortion activists broke multiple laws to try and spread lies,” said spokeswoman Rochelle Tafolla of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.”

Ah, the noble crusaders for life are in for a legal drubbing.

“Despite the lofty name of the Center for Medical Progress, public filings suggest only a small number of people are affiliated with the non-profit, none of whom are scientists or physicians engaged in advancing medical treatments. The people named as its top officers are longtime anti-abortion activists with a history of generating headlines.

Earlier this month, Planned Parenthood sued the centre in a California federal court, alleging extensive criminal misconduct. The lawsuit says the centre’s videos were the result of numerous illegalities, including making recordings without consent, registering false identities with state agencies and violating non-disclosure agreements.”

Isn’t just amazing the array of bullshit brought into play when women get close to being treated a full human beings.  Let’s hope the court, seeing the vast swath of anti-choice malfeasance, nails these bastards to the wall.

Religion is a particularly nasty subset of the patriarchal fabric of our society.  Most organized religions provide the justification for the continued male dominance in society.  I mean, if the notion of a Grand Ooga-Booga isn’t preposterous enough on its own, the fact that most of His divine commands and intuitions are tethered to a male centric point of view should be the icing on the cold cake of realization that GOB (so close, I know) is a entirely a fictitious being made up by us.

So, GOB is really just scared dudes talking to themselves.  This condition is not prone to produce much of anything useful (see the bible).  The grim offerings that do rise from this murky swamp though, surprisingly, reinforce pretty much all that is shitty about humanity.  Blind obedience, deference to authority, and of course the suspension of rationality when dealing with the world.

Bill Nye expounds on this notion in regards to Women and the deleterious bullshit they have to put up with when they are trying to make the right decision about their reproductive futures.

The take away from the video is this.  Your magic book and your pious feelings are not substitutes for facts.  Keep your magic in your head and stop fucking with women’s rights.

antichoice.   The war on women and their rights continues to chug along, it can get depressing having to digest all the misogyny that leaks from the anti-choice, anti-woman side.  Despite all the shite that is going on stories get out that are inspiring, here is a excerpt from the NYmag article about the first legal abortions and the doctors that were performing them.

““No matter how much you shame and scare them, women will still come for abortions. Pretty recently I had this young woman, 15 maybe, and we did the procedure. I said, ‘Your uterus is empty, the procedure is over. I have to go check to make sure we got everything,’ and I left the room to examine the tissue. Then I came back and told her, ‘Everything’s fine, your uterus is healthy.’ And she said, ‘So … when are you going to use the steel ball?’ I picked my jaw up off the floor and said, ‘Steel ball?’ She said, ‘Well, I went to the crisis pregnancy center and they told me you’re going to put a steel ball that’s covered with sharp blades into my uterus and twirl it around.’ And this kid still came! I was thinking, How did you ever make yourself walk in the office believing I was going to do that?””

Trust women.

Oh and a big heart-felt fuck you to so called ‘crisis pregnancy centres’ that are always filled to the brim with toxic bullshit.  We need you like we need smallpox in the world.

Go read the full post here.

prego“Pregnant woman” is not an identity. It is a social reality. A pregnant woman’s ever-contracting rights – whether she can choose to end this pregnancy, whether she will risk imprisonment for drinking too much, whether she will lose her job, whether she will be murdered by her partner – can only be seen through the filter of her inferior social status: that of woman. She neither chooses nor identifies with this status and it matters that the restrictions it places on her and others be fully acknowledged. Hundreds of women died today because of the way in which pregnancy intersects with their political and social status as women. The term “pregnant people” denies them the specificity of their deaths and masks the cause.

What gender-neutral pregnancy campaigning has achieved is wholly negative, making it impossible to articulate why there exists a class of people who are not granted full sovereignty over what lies beneath their own skin. It has located the abortion debate (which should not be a debate at all) back where conservatives want it: on the status of the foetus, not that of the gravida. It has allowed the misogynist left to consolidate their definition of woman as “passive fantasy girl with tits” as opposed to “person with independent physical functions, emotions and needs.” Above all, it has created the illusion of an opt-out to being placed in the inferior sex class. Well, there isn’t, at least not until you can be bothered to challenge the fundamental idea that half the human race is inferior (oh, but that’s so much harder than messing about with words!).

Dr. Jen Gunter : Ben Carson says a 22 week fetus can feel pain. Science says Carson is wrong.

Wow, another dude Republican candidate who gets the vapours when it comes to female reproductive issues.

Dr.Carson is a neurosurgeon perhaps he can discover what is making his thoughts come from ass instead of his head.

Quelle Surprise.

Aliens

How does one win an argument with another that doesn’t accept the basic tenets of reality.  Recently over at Violet Wisp’s blog the religious element was once again taking the moral low road on abortion and left with trying to explain how their religion was explicitly “pro-life” when in fact their magic book is, in fact, pro-abortion.  You can go over and read the thread yourself here, but I’ve screen captured the parts that I want to talk about.

argue5Observe what is going on here.  JZ is attempting to establish a coherence in what christian dogma demands and what its believers actually say.  This of course won’t be pretty.

argue6

The hell?  Just answer the damn the question.  I mean this should be a slam dunk for a true believer – the bible is god’s word – this should be elementary stuff.

argue7

Oh, I see.  Rather than admit your book is wrong, you obfuscate.  Why all the smoke and mirrors?  Here is my theory:once you admit one tenet of your religion is invalid the rest of the contradictory bullshit that you conveniently look past, will hit you squarely in the brainpan.  Religious world view destroyed – welcome to atheism.

But it looks like CS has chosen Plan B: Evasively confabulate until you have to flounce from the thread because no one is accepting the rhetorical squirrel-farts that serve as the basis for your defence of your contradictory and indefensible arguments.

I think we can let John Stewart summarize the results….

This quote is from the Harper’s Magazine archive.  We Do Abortions Here: A Nurse’s Story, is a powerful piece that goes nursebeyond the well worn positions that are still being dragged about today.  I recommend a full reading, go to Harper’s Archive to read it.

“Women have abortions because they are too old, and too young, too poor, and too rich, too stupid and too smart.  I see women who berate themselves with violent emotions for their first and only abortion, and others who return three times, five times, hauling two or three children, who cannot remember to take a pill or where they put the diaphragm.  We talk glibly about choice.  But the choice for what?  I see all the broken promises in lives lived like a series of impromptu obstacles.  There are the sweet, light promises of live and intimacy, the glittering promise of education and progress, the warm promise of safe families, long years of innocence and community.  And there is the promise of freedom: freedom from failure, from faithlessness.  Freedom from biology.  The early feminist defense of abortion asked many questions, but the one I remember is this:  Is biology destiny?  And the answer is yes, sometimes it is.  Women who have the fewest choices of all exercise their right to abortion the most.”

A small slice of what the emancipation of women looks like can be found here.  There is a distinct lack of ’empowerment’ and empty consumerist gestures in the second wave – just women liberating the space for women to make the tough calls in their lives as they see fit.  It is not happy-fun-times, not empowerful, but rather it is the cold embrace of the bitter-sweet choices in life that, till recently, only half of the population was deemed worthy enough to experience.
