I wonder if they have any religious prognosticators in Japan telling the people that abortionists, feminists, homosexuals and secular society was the reason for their natural disaster?
Apparently 9/11 was the result of god’s anger if you listen to certain prominent members of the US religious community.
Yes, with sure faced certainty these two ratbags are commenting solemnly on the will of god and what the ‘rampant secularization’ has caused in the USA. I’m betting such religious mendacity would not see the light of day in Japan, as belief in the supernatural is squarely in the private realm in the island nation. The earthquakes and tsunami in Japan are being dealt with in a rational cogent manner, no supernatural boogy-man involved or necessary.
Many religious Americans can simply not look in the mirror. The deranged reflection looking back is not a palatable imagine. This Sunday Disservice was started by Mystro with the third video that is going to be posted. The back story was missing and I decided to see which interview Dr.Winell was referring to during her presentation. As it turns out, Dr. Winell was interviewed on CNN about the Colorado shootings by Rick Sanchez. The interview provides back story and generally meanders along. But all of sudden, the conversation gets very interesting at the 5:00 minute mark when Dr.Winell mentions the secret suffering of people trapped in fundamentalist christian sects.
Rich Sanchez seems to go apoplectic as he begins feverishly defending christianity.
“but you’re not saying we can blame the faith for this…right??”…. @6:20 he begins arguing for incredulity as religion, particularly his religion could not possibly be responsible for such an atrocity.
The good doctor deflects his question pointing to multifaceted nature of situations such as these, and certainly religion was not the prime pathological factor, but one of many in the case.
Watching the hoops Dr.Winell has to jump through not to say the obvious that religious belief and faith in this case was the cause of shooting is impressive. The implicit taboos about criticizing delusional behaviour are clearly in the foreground during this clip. It gets even better though as Sanchez, true to his word had Dr.Winell back again, ostensibly with a Pastor this instance (to provide “balance” I imagine) to further discuss the case.
Hilarity ensues:
At 0:40 Sanchez reads a list of what life is sometime like in fundamentalist christian lives, and promptly dismisses it as raving of a mad man. Journalism is about bringing news to people and helping them learn more about their world, would it not be good journalism to see if Mathew Murray had a point? Of course not, how could we even think that the doctrine of christianity is delusional and evil…and to look into it on a news show(?), beyond the pale.
@1:40 – Sanchez relates the obvious and then proceeds to cut off Dr.Winell with questions about which christians are the nutjobs, and which are not. It is obvious he has dismissed the idea that most religious belief is toxic in nature and plays a minor riff on the “No True Scottsman fallacy” with regards to christianity in general.
@6:35 – Sanchez intones – “You’re not religion and christianity are you?” – What an incredibly dense question, no kidding she is against religion and christianity as a subset thereof, that should be obvious. What the good doctor has to contend with would be the results of saying yes she was against religion and christianity in a country that is embracing the delusional tenets of christianity with increasing fervour year after year. The social consequences would be dire for the good doctor if she were to make such a (factually correct) assertion.
This was, in Sanchez’s words an ‘amazing conversation’. Oh indeed it was amazing; an amazingly frightening portrait of a country that will not critically examine that factors that cause so much harm to its’ people.
And of course the video of Dr.Winell speaking after the interview beginning to describe what RTS is and the effect it has on people.
Perhaps, as the doctor states, if we can label RTS we can get more help for the people trapped in fundamental religious though prisons, so they to can breathe the free air of rationality.
The Westboro Baptist Church is the face of religion moderate religious folk prefer not to see. Intolerance, hate, and ignorance are all lauded values that are encouraged and propagated through this vile system. This clip is from 20/20 a mainstream documentary show in the USA. 20/20 gave a lot of air time to the fact that the WBC often protests at military funerals with its screeds celebrating the deaths of American soldiers. Patriotism is one angle that you can still attack religion in the US.
The clip is horrendous. The father and mother have the faces of the true believer (and they pass their hate on to their children), you can imagine they would be the ones happily torturing heretics and witches during the inquisition, or happily performing ethnic cleansing in the name of god. This is the twisted syrupy-sick hate filled face of Theocracy.
We at DWR stand and denounce this behaviour, in the name of decency, morality and rationality; concomitantly announcing to the world that Religion has no place in the 21st century.
The following clip is not surprising if you have been following the news about the Roman Catholic Church and the multitude of sexual assault cases it is been implicated in. Furthermore, the individual in charge of the rape-brigade priests is none other than Joseph Ratzinger, who now is the high exalted one in the RCC. Essentially the Cardinal’s role was to take the side of the abuser and to delay and obfuscate the process enough to maintain the status-quo.
What sort of moral fibre is this current pope made of considering that, by his writ, he allowed the abuse of children to continue under his watch? It is news like this that is always close to the top of my mind when I hear the pious bloviating on how there would be no morality without religion. Indeed.
A nice thought though, but I’m thinking that no amount of fact can lift the veil of ignorance religion has cast about the eyes of so many.
This is a delightful video. Nothing illustrates the absurdity of a bigoted position like keeping the content and switching the roles. Kudos to youtuber healthyaddict for posting this vid and especially for introducing me to Greta Christina’s Blog. I highly recommend checking the blog out for some truly thorough and well written debunking of theistic skulduggery.
Welcome readers to our next semi-regular feature here at DWR. The last Sunday Featurette was called the Sunday Creationist Smackdown and was geared toward providing a basis for succinctly arguing down the creationist god-babble one encounters on the Internet. The focus of this feature will be different.
The authors of this blog are in agreement that all religions are primarily an authoritarian, misogynistic, dehumanizing , regressive (really too many adjectives to list, but you get the idea) feature of societies. In a better world, religion and magical belief would be marginalized and placed in the dustbin of history to be used as a learning opportunity on how not to structure human society.
The Internet has allowed for a great deal of critical examination and refutation of religious dogma. The more rational inquiry there is into the rotten edifice of religion, the sooner it can be brought down and brought to heel allowing humanity to further progress into the 21st century without the delusional impediments religion brings to the table.
This video is the story of one woman’s trek into hell, sponsored by Allah and Islam. Her offence, being a woman for one, and secondly having the audacity not to wear a veil in public. Apologists say that Islam is a religion of peace, to which I say, where is this woman’s peace? Where is her dignity? Islam, like christianity is misogynistic, totalitarian and filled with xenophobia and hate. When it spills into the light we can see exactly how ugly “keeping the faith” is…
Let the first DWR Religious Disservice begin now!
Trigger warning for violence and rape.
Mother Jones has an article and photo essay about the women self-immolating in Afghanistan reaffirming the utter lack of misogyny (funny how that correlates with religious belief) present in religiously deluded societies.
