toxicreligion   I was going to preface this post with a Captain Stupid character but I found that the outright level of stupid going on here required a (much) higher rank in the Hurr-Durr Legion to properly accommodate the conditions being described.  The leaders of the ulta-orthodox Belz sect in North London eminently qualify for Admiralty in the Legion.  These antediluvian bags of douche recently deployed a fatwah against women who have the audacity to drive cars with the “immodest” goal of… it is almost nigh unspeakable… yet intone it I must… (*screwing courage to the sticking place*) – taking their children to school!!!! (!)

“The Belz, who originated in Ukraine in the early 19th Century, are an ultra-Orthodox sect who follow Haredi Judaism.

Leaders of the ultra-Orthodox Belz sect in north London wrote to parents saying “no child will be allowed to learn in our school” if their mother drives.

Women driving “goes against the laws of modesty within our society”, it said.”

Furthermore:

“The letter, which was signed from the “spiritual management” of Belz institutions, said: “There has been an increase in incidences of mothers of our students who have begun driving cars, something that goes against the laws of modesty within our society.”

Well, well, well.  Here we have, once again, patriarchal religious bullshit fucking up women’s lives.  Ostensibly in the pursuit of modesty women, already tasked with rreligionandpatriarchyaising their children and domestic duties because it is their god mandated role, can’t do the car thing because that might give them airs about independence or freedom; certainly anything that detracts from their roles as broodmares and domestic servants must be against God.

I knew this was going to be a pithy article when I saw the Ultra-Orthodox in the title because as soon as the religious attach the word ‘Orthodox’ to their particular school of magic – you know horrendous things are on the way.  On the downside, treating women as chattel is only Level One in their quest to construct a broken religious society.

These regressive dolts embrace ignorance with the mightiest of aplomb.

“An emphasis on studying the Torah has led to concerns that Haredi boys are leaving school with few qualifications.

Men often continue with their prayer studies after marriage, rather than seek work, and those who do have employment have been affected by changes in traditional occupations, like textiles.

As a result, poverty and deprivation tend to hit Haredi households hard, and there’s evidence that Haredi areas in Hackney, for example, receive higher than average rates of means-tested benefits.”

So the focus of their education for dudes is to think-fap on their magic book until they are useless to themselves and the rest of society.  Care to guess who has to work in the real world and make real money aaaaand still be the domestic servant?  And of course, living in a secular society means that the rest of the population has to pay for their religious bridge-to-nowhere-educmacational-bollocks-regime.  Never, not even for one minute, should you consider religion to be a positive force in society, these yahoos exemplify the bulk-stupid that most religions bring to the societal table.

“[…] from the Belz community, a spokesman said it never intended to “stigmatise or discriminate against children or their parents”.

It said: “We are proud of what we stand for and we do not feel the need to excuse ourselves for our deeply held beliefs and staunchly maintained way of life.

“It has withstood the test of time and is not prone to the vagaries of passing fads.”

Counterexample time!

It was not our intent to stigmatize colour children by giving them their own drinking fountain and forbidding them to use the one labelled ‘Whites Only’ – because intent, like their religiously-addled ‘declarations’, are fucking magical.

I cast a cynical eye toward a belief system that is evaluated and venerated on the single condition of being ‘long-lived’.  The Bubonic plague has withstood the test of time as well – checkmarks of goodness to be dispensed for all…

The extra-sad take away from this is that these religious misogynists, by enforcing the ban on women driving their kids to school, has created a what is essentially a nightmare scenario for British legislators.

“This goes to the heart of what is a fantastically difficult problem now facing the government in drafting a counter-extremism bill that protects against extremism, but also safeguards religious freedom.

Earlier this year, Home Secretary Theresa May defined extremism as “the vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and the mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs”.

It throws up the question, is a religious ban on women driving active opposition to the British value of individual liberty? And how do you square that with the other British value of mutual respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs?”

The above is worth an entire post unto itself just to document the outrageous pretzel-bends secular lawmakers are undertaking in attempting to deal with this religious foolishness.  Invoking the religious tolerance idea for misogynistic practices that are clearly antithetical to a secular society seems misguided to me.  But that, as stated, is another debate.

Let’s close instead with a statement from the high-admiral shitlords themselves:

“The statement continued: “In an effort to formulate these guidelines the issue of women driving cars became conflated with broader issues which we intended to address. “

They know.

You don’t release baffle-gab press releases like the above without not knowing.

How could they not know that the stupid shit they are imposing on women and children stinks all the way up to their imaginary heaven.  Once their nuclear-grade stupid hit the Press and the rest of secular society, it was rightly called out for being pure Dumbonium, their only recourse is to hide behind the thin mantle of ‘religious tolerance’ and hope the attention of the public wanes from their self-created sewer of misguided religious tomfoolery.

And there we have it folks – religion once again attempting to lead society away from civilization and modernity.

Greetings and good day fair readership!

luggage.   I have the very good fortune of being able to travel to Iceland on a trip with my choir.  Thus, my regular blogular activities shall not be pursued by myself.  However, the rest of the DWR team is stepping up to fill the gap.  The Intransigent One, Mystrox and Bleatmop will take the mantle of convivial hosting in my absence so expect minimal disruption in the coming week. :)

I endeavor to do my best representing Alberta’s amateur choral community.  Take care everyone, and play nice with the other admins here on DWR.

Arbourist out.

Waterfalls - Apparently they are a thing in Iceland.

Waterfalls – Apparently they are a popular venue in Iceland.  If I have internet access, I’ll be posting some hopefully boffo pictures of my own.

Speaking of music most likely to get you killed while driving…  Here’s what I must never listen to in the car.  Not while driving because it could get me killed, and not as a passenger because it could get me committed.  I air-conduct.  I air-bass-drum.  And I sing along.  The dynamic marking is fff and the top note is G#5, and that is a powerful note for me, and I bring it.

Crank up your audio, hang onto your butts, and have a listen:

Singing in the Verdi Requiem has been one of the top musical highlights of my whole life so far.  Being in the middle of the action in the Dies Irae  is an amazing not only sonic, but physical, sensation.  In the performance I did, the percussionist had two bass drums and hit one with each hand, and you could feel it through the floor.  The conductor said to us choristers, “There’s no way I’m telling the orchestra to hold back dynamically at this part, you’ll just have to be louder.”  So we were.  Goddam folks.  And holy fuck.  We leaped to our feet at the first beat of the bass drum, and we breathed as one, and we were glorious.

Bottom line: if you ever get the chance to hear the Verdi Requiem live, do it.  You don’t have to believe any of the text to have your socks knocked off.

Dancing season is rapidly coming to close.  Not a moment too soon, I must heartily add,  as I will miss nothing about the hot chaotic mess that is hosting a Dance Festival.  Children running, crying, scurrying about, being chased by frazzled Moms – all to the backdrop of shitty canned music and the omnipresent sickly smell of too much hairspray.  One can feel the anxiety in the air as troops of children are herded about for their stiltedly choreographed time on stage.  So many shades of awesome; but not the reason for this post today.  Today we look at the larger issue of the replication of the patriarchal beauty standard via the innocuous vehicle known as the teen Dance Festival.

Daughter Crying while being attended to by Mom.

Daughter Crying while being attended to by Mom.

I see this happening multiple times during the festivals I work.  A distraught daughter being made up by her Mom in preparation for some sort of dance routine that will be judged and graded during said competition.  Young girls being preened and made up to look like something they are not.  Not all, as in the above picture, are really that into the entire process.  Yet, the show and the make-up must go on.  They are groomed into dancer approved appearances like this:

Step 1

Or this:

Step 2

The question I have is this – how important a quality is ‘sexy’ for female dancers?  The pictures provided certainly seem to prioritize a certain look: Lithe, heavily made up, and much skin showing.   Does this standard apply to all dance?  Of course not, but in dance festival land as I’ve seen,  step 2 could be considered the norm.

Against the backdrop of our societies standards, “step 2” can send a ruinous message to girls/women about how they should look to be successful in their personal pursuits and society in general.

How did dancing get to be like this?  We need only to look at the standards set by society in general for women.

Errr...yah.

Errr…yah.

childmakeup1The cultural transmission of these toxic norms is carried across generations – the norms ingrained on the mother are inscribed onto the daughter as she grows up and looks to her mother to help cope with being female in our society.  So, the in the dance festivals I observe, I can see this transmission of patriarchal norms in action.  Small children are plucked and primped, made to wear revealing clothing and generally forced to embody what is considered to be ‘sexy’ as per the male-gaze.  This process is only made possible with the cooperation and willingness of older women to groom their children into what has been deemed as an acceptable female pursuit by society.  It is a vicious cycle that needs to be examine more and unpacked to find ways in which dancing can be made less of a grooming tool of the patriarchy and more of an actively fun pursuit for children who want to express themselves in a venerated art-form.

Let it be said that I am not against the art of dancing, but rather, the poisonous patriarchal outer shell, that has encased much of the art-form within its clutches.

One retired general’s opinion on why ISIS such a force in the world. A quick yet still interesting interview tagging social media and the media cycle as contributors to the success of ISIL.

Well we can’t be posting sunshine everyday here at DWR.  A small reminder of what the people of our nations are up against.  From the essay titled Revolution and American Empire by Rob Urie.

“Liberal economists have ‘fought the good fight’ for nominally populist economic programs for the last decade with little but growing frustration to show for it. In sequence, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama enacted economic policies— deregulation of banks, tax cuts for the very wealthy, the largest bank bailouts in human history and ‘trade’ deals that formalize corporate control over civil governance. There exist economic theories to support each and every one of these policies. Many prominent economists base which economic policies they support or oppose on which political Party is in office at the time they are proposed. The policies enacted are retroactively deemed ‘politically feasible’ in tacit admission that economic outcomes are politically determined. ‘Markets’ are used to explain these outcomes with the politics removed.

From the time of the American Revolution to today, with a brief compromise between 1948 and about 1973, the U.S. has been run by and for a self-serving plutocracy. Slavery and genocide weren’t ‘accidents’ nor were they the product of primitive thinking. U.S. wars in Central America, Southeast Asia and Iraq were / are as primitive, in the sense of being for-profit and brutal, as any in human history. And it is hardly an accident that elite impunity and immunity from prosecution for crimes, including War Crimes, is matched by brutal repression of the economic underclasses. Banks and corporations are the social forms of economic imperialism, necessary to the imperial project that places the rest of us as imperial subjects. Back to the start: the American Revolution was fought for the freedom to repress while the revolutions of liberation it has opposed were / are by-and-large fought against it.

The obligatory liberal chides against Russian and Cuban totalitarianism, in their contemporary incarnations against ‘strongman’ Vladimir Putin and the aging Fidel Castro, never admit to two centuries of American crimes or to never ending U.S. attempts to undermine democratic revolutions around the globe. This isn’t to gloss over crimes— the U.S. is the only nation in history to drop atom bombs on largely civilian populations, U.S. General Curtis LeMay joked that had the U.S. lost WWII he would have hung for the bombing of Tokyo, three million killed in the Korean War, three million killed in Vietnam, one million killed in Iraq and substantial portions of Central America turned into right-wing gangster states. Cuba is poor today because the U.S. has enforced an economic blockade of it for half a century. And the only guarantee from ‘liberalized’ relations between the U.S. and Cuba is that Cuba will get the worst of it.”

The front flowerbed at Arb’s and my place is starting to take off – perennials that I’ve planted over the couple years we’ve owned the house, are established enough now, that they can dedicate some energy to blooming! Of course, weather that’s good for flowers is also good for weeds, and our weed crop is plentiful, so I was out pulling weeds yesterday evening.

flowergarden201505

Working in the front yard is not a peaceful and relaxing experience for me. I feel self-conscious about bending over with my back to the street and my butt in the air and often get into weird positions trying to avoid it. I’m on edge and there’s a constant stream of snarky comebacks and verbal self-defense going on in my head, along with self-pep-talks about how this is my yard and I have the right to be in it and what I look like while doing yardwork is nobody’s business.

Why?

In a word: men.

Like last night when a carload of young men appeared seemingly out of nowhere, yelled something about my fat ass, and peeled out with a screech of tires and raucous laughter.

This shit doesn’t happen super-often – not every time I’m out in the front yard, for example. But it’s often enough that anticipating it and steeling myself against it, takes a non-negligible portion of my mental CPU cycles. It doesn’t matter that not every man who passes by harasses me, and that in general not all men harass women. Enough men harass women often enough, that being on guard against it is an almost-constant thing you do, if you’re a woman.
